Where to visit near Encinitas and San Diego

My husband and I are in our late 60s and are visiting someone for a couple of days in January in Encinitas. This is our first trip here. We have 4 days after our visit to get back to LA. We are wondering where we should go and visit in the areas nearby or on our way back to LA.

We love nature and love to walk and swim but cannot do any heavy hiking. We prefer doing things that are off the beaten track, not too touristy but love beautiful beaches and scenery.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks so much.

Encinitas is a suburb of the city of San Diego which is nearby.

While you are visiting your friend there you can easily go to meditation garden at Swami's or the San Diego Botanical Garden.

In the city of San Diego (about 15min. south) you'll find the neighborhood of La Jolla where you can walk in the Torrey Pines State Reserve, visit La Jolla Cove to see the seals and sea lions in their native environment.

About 30min. south in the city of San Diego you can go to Balboa Park with its small museums, walking trails, outdoor entertainment and live theater. You can also visit Cabrillo National Monument for Ca. history, gorgeous 180deg views etc.

IF you've already visited San Diego and don't feel like going south you can go east to the desert for Anza Borrego State Park, or perhaps to wine tasting in Temecula. I am sure your friend will also offer suggestions as there are many things to see/do in San Diego County.

How adventurous are you?....perhaps you might consider a hot air balloon ride from Del Mar that will give you an awesome experience, not to mention killer views...here are a few companies:

For a scenic and different but equally rewarding experience, you might consider checking out one of the lush resorts and grabbing lunch or dinner on the spectacular grounds of The Rancho Valencia Resort, Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, or the Grand Del Mar--all 3 should be within 15-20 minutes from where you are staying. I favor the Rancho Valencia but all 3 are nice.

Thanks Elchevere for your suggestions. I think the hot air balloon is a little pricey for me. I might try lunch at one of the resorts though. That could be fun. Can I use the pools or the beach at the hotel?

Wendy - there is no beach at the hotels that elchevere listed. Rancho Valencia, Inn at Rancho Santa Fe or Grand Del Mar. They are inland and away from the ocean.

Without researching each of their websites I feel pretty certain that you can't just go there and use there pool. Maybe if you have a spa treatment you can have access but you'd have to look at each of their websites and see if you can.

I should add that the hotels that elchevere mentions are all beautiful hotels.

In Encinitas there is the Botanic Garden. But since you'll be staying with friends you probably already know that

On your way up to LA have a look stopping at Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach.

You can swim at the beach in all of those places. BTW, all beaches in CA are public and you can swim at them.

Unlikely to want to swim at a beach in January.

IF you get spa treatments at the hotels they generally then allow you to use the facilities like the pool. Otherwise, no you cannot just use the pool at a random hotel if you don't stay there.
