Need ideas - 7 days - 2 teenagers - 1 week in SF & Yosemite

Please help! Mom, dad & two older teens - flying from Boston to SF at end of June. Impossible to do it all in a week - but we'd like to see the highlights of SF & Yosemite. All suggestions are appreciated - including places to stay, restaurants, rent car, etc. No car needed for SF, but for trip to Yosemite.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Hi dreamweaver8462

We'd be happy to help you with Yosemite ideas over on the Yosemite NP forum. This one is all about the fabulous city of San Francisco.

For both of your destinations, read the Top Questions in the upper right for lodging & activity ideas. Then share your travel style, budget, and such.

Getting lodging for Yosemite will be more challenging than for San Francisco, so you might want to organize that portion of the trip first, then fit SF either before or after (whenever you are not in Yosemite.) Yosemite Valley will be incredibly busy on weekends, so try to visit mid-week when it will just be very very busy. I'l watch for your new thread on the Yosemite forum.

Have you checked mileage from San Francisco to Yosemite?

Deducting two days for travel you do not have a lot of time.

Suggest you do San Francisco and leave Yosemite for another trip.

midon1 ~ I know that Yosemite was not appealing to you, but most folks can manage a 200 mile / 4 hour drive and still have time for fun in the destination. Some people even visit Yosemite as a day trip from San Francisco! IMO, two destinations for a one week trip is reasonable.

And teenagers are likely to have a great time in Yosemite.

We love to help visitors with their SF planning but we would appreciate if you spend a few minutes searching the forum for teenagers and you will see a lot of ideas. Similarly the top questions can give you ideas on where to stay and what to do The more info you can give us on what you want to do the more we can help you

Some ideas biking across the Golden gate bridge GO cars and Segway rides rocketboat ride in the Bay. Hiking on Angel island. Watching then Giants at Att park. The Exploratorium is a great place to visit

Please go to Yosemite for a couple of days at least As pacificNW says it is worth the 4 hours drive. Cars can be rented at Union Square

we have younger teens too and we get them involved in the planning so they also get to chose the activities they like doing. And they can search and research them for you

Google maps show mileage to be 211 miles one way.

If your going to Yosemite for a few hours you are wasting your time.

Midon1. Since the OP has a week in our neck of the woods, driving to Yosemite for a couple of days is what we recommend. PacificNW said 200 miles and you say 211 miles. Not sure what you are arguing about. The place to discuss Yosemite is the Yosemite forum.

If driving to/from Yosemite on Highway 120, it's also possible to stop along the way in Gold-Rush-era towns to get a taste of California history that way: e.g. Groveland, Sonora (the latter is larger, but a few miles east of the route to Yosemite).

Thanks for the great suggestions, everyone!

I like the idea of riding bikes across the Golden gate bridge, but I was wondering about the air quality because we recently tried walking across the Brooklyn Bridge and the car exhaust was overwhelming.

I also really like the suggestion of stopping in "gold rush era" towns. Specifics on that would be appreciated.

Driving 4 hours - SF to Yosemite - is not a problem. We plan to visit the Mariposa Grove Sequoias as well. Suggestions for that area would also be welcomed.

You can always check the air quality a day before you travel if you are that sensitive -- Never heard car exhaust to be an issue going over the Golden Gate Bridge.

For Yosemite questions, please read the top question in the Yosemite Forum as it will help you with the Mariposa Grove answer. You can search for Sonora and ask questions about that in that forum or just google the town of Sonora.
