We are going to San Francisco for several days in November and plan to do some tours and see the city.

Which part of Francisco should I stay for the best convenience to go on Tours etc. The hotels are commonly listed as Fisherman 's Wharf, Nob Hill, civic center. Marina,Financial district, North Beach and South beach. Please assist us in choosing the most convenient area.

Thank you

In order of likely preference

1Union Square (most centrally located)

2Nob Hill

Embarcadero

Financial

3Fisherman's Wharf

4Lombard Street (Marina)

North Beach is OK

South Beach is too remote

Avoid Civic Center

Maybe list some of the hotel choices for better feedback.

In my opinion you definitely want Union Square. All of the transportation options are accessible from here, cable cars, Muni buses, BART (which you would not use for general getting around town as it only comes in from the airport, goes down Market Street and under the Bay to the outreaches, you can walk to Market Street to take the historic F line streetcars to the Embarcadero.

Don't be charmed into staying in Fisherman's Wharf because it is near the Alcatraz tours and Pier 39. The area is crowded, noisy, overrun by hucksters.

That said, fun to VISIT. Not to sleep.

This is an easy cable car ride or Muni bus ride from Union Square. San Francisco is a compact city. You want to be in a pleasant place with access to public transportation.

Connecting the Wharf, Union Square and the Embarcadero makes a triangle. I would want to stay at one of the points, along the sides or anywhere inside that triangle. Union Square would be my first choice. Other than that, I like the Embarcadero and North Beach. There are some rare instances when I would choose the Wharf, Pacific Heights or one of the many other beautiful districts in the City for my hotel location.

Japantown and Civic Center would be very, very low on my preference list as a general visitor.

I think Union Square is the most central, nice and convenient place to stay. All transit options lead in and out of there.

I second Union Square. There's tons of restuartants and shopping whithin walking distnace, I would also have to say it is probably one of the safest areas of the city, especailly at night. Fishermans Warf is fun to visit but not to stay, it is usually more expensive and the accomadtions aren't as nice. There are always tons of people, lots of families and kids.....Financial district is more for business visits, it tends to be pretty empty during the weekends, not much action and less safe during the weekends because there's not many people around. I have actually never stayed at Nob Hill area but I know there are some really nice upscale hotels there.
