Wondering where a good place to kayak is around Bar Harbor.

We tried kayaking last year in Boothbay--it was nice but very choppy and islands to explore were pretty far. (We had a 6 year old and 12 year old with us)

Is Acadia our best bet? We are hoping for a place where you can kayak a ways and then stop off at different places to explore.

Any place like this? Suggestions?

Several companies launch right from the village of Bar Harbor and kayak around the Porcupine Islands. Whether or not the water is calm or choppy depends on the weather but it is often calm and easy to navigate with a kayak. The islands are very close that you can circle in the tandem kayak.

You could also take a trip by National Park Kayak. They take you over to the north western side of the island, drop you there, and you kayak a couple miles to a new destination.

The trips with a kayak company are all led by a guide and I don't think you get out and explore on many of them. Some of the Bar Harbor trips allow you to get out on one of the Porcupine Islands if the tide is right.

Check out Aquaterra for Bar Harbor kayaking and National Park Kayak for quietside kayaking. Both are excellent companies.

You can rent your own kayaks and kayak around Little Long Pond or Echo Lake. There is a kayak/canoe rental shop at Little Long Pond so you wouldn't have to put the boat on your car.
