Does anyone know if there will be any fireworks displays in the Waikoloa Beach Resort area for the Chinese New Year celebration on February 1, 2014??
Good question. There will be events around the island but I don't recall fireworks at the resorts. WBR website says with respect to 2/1: "
Saturday 05:00 pm
Kung hee fat choy! Celebrate Chinese New Year, the Year of the Horse, with a lion dance performance by the Hawaii Lion Dance Association. Get FREE Li-see packets to place your honorarium inside then feed it to the lion. It is said to bring you good luck in the future.
Meet at Center Court Stage."
There is a number to call for more info though:
A lot of residents will be doing their own, that's for sure! Hilo will be popping with the sound of crackers.
There is more emphasis in the Asian culture here on crackers to drive away the evil spirits than on aerial visual displays. The resorts will have their own interpretation.
Go to Hilo for an authentic Hawaiian style celebration.
I have no idea what the resorts do, but the Hilo celebration is a lot of fun! I took a young friend visiting from new Zealand one year, and it was one of the highlights of her trip . . .
It is fun. Thanks to Alice Moon who is a big part of the downtown Hilo Association for keeping the annual festival going. It has moved from Kalakaua Park to the Bandstand near the bus terminal, on the Bayfront.
When we were there in 2011 the Hilton put on a Big fireworks display. There also was a very large convention going on at the time. (SAP Multinational Software Corp.) Not sure if they had something to with it,we were staying at Halii Kai and had a great view of it without the crowds at the Hilton.
