Planning an "I-90 road trip" from Cleveland in early June and am looking at my options.
We plan to visit Mt. Rushmore on the way West, then will spend a day or two driving through Yellowstone. Main goal is to show my son, 8 by the time of the trip, Old Faithful and some of the other major sites.
Of course, all the lodges in the park are fully booked the week we are going in June--you almost have to book a year in advance for a stay in the park itself, it seems. Grrrr.
Most direct route to the park from Mt. Rushmore takes us through Cody, WY, which is about an hour east of the East park entrance. How reasonable is it to use Cody as a base for a quick day trip through Yellowstone? Looks like lots to do in Cody itself, but mostly I need a base camp for travel into the park. I acknowledge that the park is so huge that no matter where I stay, I'm going to be driving A LOT. I have only a short time to stay, so I acknowledge I'm not going to see every nook and cranny of the park.
My other option is to drive much further PM to Gardiner, MT. If it's a better experience, I may do that instead.
Thanks for any input!
