First time trip and a few questions

Hello, first time we are heading to Madeira and we are looking for a few bits of information if anyone could help;

We aren’t massive party goers but we do enjoy a couple of drinks after an evening meal, is the area okay does it have restaurants that will have music in the background maybe pubs with TVs etc ?

What is the public transportation like in the area ? Are taxis fairly priced or are the busses the best option for navigating around the island ?

Is there many walking trails in the area, we love to explore on foot but unsure how this specific area is for this type of thing ?

Also I’ve just realised we’ve booked up during the World Cup so would any where show any live matches 😂.

And finally does anyone have any suggestions for things to do and places to explore ?

Thanks in advance for any replies :)

There are several restaurants which will have bars attached so you can get a drink. You may have to ask in the places which have TV about the World cup, Portuguese are passionate about football so I am sure it will be available somewhere. Not sure about evening entertainment, but at the top of this page there are topics 'Things to do' and 'Restaurants' if you click on each one in turn to open, it has the info you need, for restaurants and walks and other activities for Machico area.

Here is the bus timetable into the City. https://www.sam.pt/expresso.html If you are staying in a hotel they may have a courtesy bus into the City but most only run during the day. Taxis will be around but before you get into one, make sure that you agree a price, they don't have to use the meter except in Funchal area, so it is important that you know how much it will cost.

Hi Bradley where are you staying? So many places to eat and drink all over Funchal if that's where your accommodation is. As for football, you will find it everywhere. Madeirans love football (you know that Ronaldo is Madeiran don't you?). You will find television sets in many bars and cafes and even some restaurants. Santa Caterina park above the marina has put up a large screen in the past to show matches. Excellent atmosphere too with all nationalities watching together peacefully. If Portugal win a match there will be a parade of cars along the seafront road next to the marina with flags, horns tooting and celebrations into the night!

By the way it's worth visiting the CR7 museum at the Marina in Funchal. I went on my last trip, although I'm not a fan of any of his clubs. Only a couple of euros and it's an eyewatering display of his medals, awards and trophies. It's in the basement of the CR7 hotel - where better to store all his shiny memorabilia?!

Stayed in Machico at Easter time

Very friendly. low key, relaxed town and far less touristy than Funchal and feels very “local”

Plenty of bars and restaurants - we particularly liked the fish restaurant on the sea front called Mare Alta and the modernish bar round on the harbour front called The Baia Beach Club. There is a fairly long established bar/restaurant called O Casco, just behind the Forum, there was a large screen with football on the night we went in (this place doesn’t seem to have changed much since our first visit over 20 years ago). Slightly out of town there is an excellent restaurant called Lilys with great views back down the valley to the town– (a taxi ride away, less than 10 euros each way).

Fairly good bus service to Funchal that we used a couple of times otherwise we used taxis for shorter journeys – we always asked the price before getting in but mostly told it was on a meter. The local Taxi drivers seem keen to take you on excursions or half day trips. Didn’t do one this time but we have a few years ago.

Standing at the bus stop in Machico we were offered “special prices” to Funchal by a couple of different taxis.

Enjoy your trip

as you like walks bus 113 which you'll find in the given link stops at the main bus station in machico and takes you to baia d'abra and from here you'll see the start of a pretty impressive trail and a quite demanding one in parts.

also i didn't see anywhere to buy food and water in the area so you might be wise to take your own.

Thank you very much for the replies.

We also are looking at a hire car is it work doing ?

Would there be places we simply couldn’t explore without a car ?
