Overnight Hotel recommendations near Auto train station

We are planning to take the Auto train from Lorton to Sanford in April for the first time and want to make sure we are in Lorton with plenty of time to load up the car for the trip. We're about 8 hours North of Lorton and have decided we should probably spend the night before in a nearby hotel. Can someone recommend a basic clean Hotel for us to spend the night before the trip?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The closest hotel is going to be the Holiday Inn Express in Lorton, which is under a mile away from the train station. It's a perfectly fine budget choice, and it does include breakfast, which can be a plus.

If you want to stay in an area with a few more amenities nearby, you might look at hotels near Potomac Mills Mall, which include a Comfort Inn and a Hampton Inn plus a few others, I think. You'll also be close to lots of shopping for any last-minute items you might need or have forgotten. It would be one more exit down I-95 from Lorton (under 10 miles).

I believe the Auto Train leaves at 4 PM. I agree with your plan to spend the night prior somewhere near the train, but given that departure time I think you'd be safe to stay anywhere in the greater Washington, D.C. area and drive the last 20 or 30 minutes on the day of the train. While I rarely recommend it for tourists wanting to explore D.C. itself, you might look at one of the many hotels in the National Harbor development in Maryland. It is just off I-95, on the Potomac River right before you cross into VA. It's about 30 minutes from the Auto Train during non-rush hour periods. If you had a hotel there, and checked out at the 11 AM checkout time, you'd still have hours to spare getting to the train.

National Harbor has some nice restaurants on the water, shops, and a giant ferris wheel, among other things. There is also a fancy MGM Casino next door that's worth a visit if casinos are your thing. Because of the large number of rooms there and the fact that they try (and fail) to compete for tourist business, good deals can be found at times.
