Galveston in August

Hello, I am from Bellingham, WA and will be coming to Galveston in August for 10 days for a wedding. Obviously, being a native Washingtonian, we are not used to much heat. Any advice to survive the heat/humidity down there? Also, are there any local festivals/activities happening on the Island in August?

Many thanks for any advice you have to offer!

To help with the heat, drink lots of water and stay inside during the heat of the day or be in a pool somewhere.

You will want to bring a jacket/sweater even though it'll be hot, because we love our air-conditioning and restaurants/shops will be very cold inside. Don't forget the sunscreen.

Welcome to Texas!!

Thanks! Also, forgot to ask-- does it cool off at night? And are the mosquitoes bad?

It will cool down some, but by no means cold. Average lows for August are upper 70s. There is usually a nice breeze coming off the water which can help it feel more comfortable also and help keep mosquitos away, if you are along the seawall.

I like weatherunderground for history - average high 90 average low 80 during August. Mosquitoes are more a function of rain and standing water. August is not the highest season for them.

Thanks very much for all the info! Also, somewhat off-topic, but can you recommend a good steakhouse in the area?

One doesn't really go to Galveston for the steaks. It's a seafood/shellfish kind of town. If you want a good steak, go to Killen's Steakhouse in Alvin, but make reservations in advance. (It's an upscale place price-wise, BTW, but serves one of the best steaks in the area--check reviews on TripAdvisor, as well as other sources such as yelp.com, etc.)

Having said that, if you MUST have steak in Galveston, try The Steakhouse at The San Luis Resort (expensive) or Saltgrass Steakhouse (more moderately priced, lower quality).

kimberly--

Everyone will have his/her own recommendation, and they're all good. For upscale dining, try Rudy & Paco's http://rudyandpaco.com/

A traditional spot (over 100 years old) is Gaido's http://www.gaidos.com/

There are many, many other (less expensive) places you can get great fried seafood and shellfish, both along seawall boulevard and near the harbor, but IMHO, I'd personally avoid places that are chain restaurants if you want better food. (Use your favorite search engine to find "Chain restaurants in Galveston".)

Unfortunately, August is not the best time to get fresh oysters (the old "R"-month rule still prevails as to quality, but they're safe to eat--just not as great quality-wise. Servers will guide you, so listen to them. Gulf oysters are much bigger than the Pacific oysters you're used to--probably 3-4 times as big in season.

Others will undoubtedly have great suggestions that are their favorites. Enjoy!
