Hobart to New Norfolk then Ross in one day?

We have a trip planned for Tasmania in February 2023.

On the day we leave Hobart, after 5 nights/4 days in Hobart itself, our next overnight stop is Ross. However, I particularly want to see New Norfolk but only have the day. Part of this day has to be taken up with travel to Ross, as we have accommodation booked for the night.

I'm hoping we can drive to Derwent River Estate, after leaving Hobart, for a tasting then on to New Norfolk itself to explore a little of the town site & stop for lunch. (recommendations for places to stop for lunch in New Norfolk welcome).

After lunch and possible further exploration of the town and its antique shops we plan to set off for Ross.

The trip planners all seem to indicate that New Norfolk is roughly 40 to 50 minutes from Hobart and that Ross is about 1.5hrs from New Norfolk.

I just need some reassurance that this is a reasonable plan for our day.

All comments welcome - we have been to twice Tasmania before but this was some years ago and traffic & road conditions will probably have changed in this time. Looking forward to seeing your comments & ideas

Those travel times are realistic and so is your plan for the day. I would normally expect the leg to Ross to take a bit less than 1.5 hours but it looks like there are roadworks affecting travel time at the moment. The Midland Highway is being upgraded section-by-section, with many sections completed, so you'll probably find it an easier drive than the last time you were here.

New Norfolk isn't flush with non-franchise eating options, especially early to mid-week. If you're there from Friday to Sunday and want to go upmarket there's the Agrarian Kitchen (bookings required for the restaurant; they also offer cafe-style dining and take-away on weekends). Thursday to Sunday there's the Patchwork Cafe. Cheeky Little Place and The Quilted Teapot are open every weekday, the latter also on Saturdays. This information could be obsolete by February of course...

Hi Slomo7,

Thank you for confirming my travel times! Sadly we will be heading out to New Norfolk on a Wednesday, so it

seems options for lunch might be limited. The upside is more reason to pack a picnic of fabulous local

produce before we leave Hobart and then add anything yummy that we spot along the way. Any hints

regarding a good spot for a picnic?

Pulpit Rock is the only option with an elevated view.

Other options are Arthur Square at the eastern end of the main street, Tynwald Park on the eastern side of town, or drive 10km west to Salmon Ponds (English garden, entry fee applies, restaurant/café onsite).
