I'm afraid that Alton Towers is a bit in the middle of nowhere! But the countryside around is some of the best in England

Stoke-on-Trent is the nearest main shopping cente - but not very pretty!

If you are interested in porcelain the city museum has some fantastic displays and the nearby Gladstone museum shows the whole process of making pots - you can even "throw" your own.

Not too far away at the foot of the Derbyshire Dales (Peak District National Park) is the small market town of Ashbourne. Some nice independent shops + the usual supermarkets etc. The town is close to Carsington Water - ideal for walking/picnics etc.
