Hadrian's Wall

Hi there,

My husband and I and the dog are staying in Alnwick for a week in July and as we are that far North we wanted to take the opportunity and visit a part of Hadrians wall. I know we are going to have to travel about an hour south of where we are staying but can anyone recommend what part of the area they would go and see taking into consideration where we have to travel from? We would plan on spending the day doing it.

Thanks

Clare

We have done this in reverse. I would recommend the country roads north of Haltwhistle.

Can't give road numbers but you can check on map I'd suggest Alnwick to Rothbury , Scots gap , past Wallington then heading to Hexham , turn off at chollerford on what is called the military road this takes you past Chester fort and Housesteads , also gives you access to many parts if the wall , car parks on route . This road goes on to Greenhead , where you can join A69 to Newcastle then A1 up to Alnwick if you don't fancy a return on the back roads .

This site of BBC origin will give you an idea of what is there and the general condition of each section of the monument.

Also on the site index are several entries with further details, all listed under Hadrian's Wall. As the entries cover the full length of the wall it will help you choose the part you will find the most interesting.

Have fun.

Area around Haltwhistle for Vindolanda and Housesteads Roman sites with fantastic scenery including sycamore gap as well as pleasant pubs for lunch.
