Getting from Cairns to Daintree

We are yanks who are reluctant to rent a car in Australia due to the "lefty" issue. We are taking a train to Cairns, and will from there spend 4 nights in Daintree. The lodge owners say we should rent a car. Is there other viable transportation, or should we jump into the adventure of driving "wrong".

Driving on the "other side" of the car is very easy to get used to ... and part of the adventure of travel. When you are a passenger in the states you probably "do the driving" so the right hand side is not a scary place to sit behind the controls! Go for it but make sure you have good insurance on the rental.

Hi Gymowner

you might be able to get a shuttle service, but I would imagine that it would be a bit costly.

I know shuttles from Port Douglas go to Cairns Airport and vice versa, but have not heard of one going to the Daintree.

Why not google airport shuttles cairns or shuttle service cairns and see what you come up with?

But first check out the price of hiring a car fully amped up with insurance so at least you can do a price comparison between the shuttle and the car rental, ie, if there is a shuttle who will take you to your accom and pick you up again.

Country Road Coaches go to Cooktown via coastal and inland, maybe do a round trip.

Trouble is once there you are not mobile and 4 nights in the Daintree seems a lot. Very beaufitul area but hardly the be all and end all of this wonderful region.

Should say the bus stops at Cape Tribulation enroute to Cooktown and the other way is the inland route which is vastly different scenery.

Daintree Village though is different, I just presumed Cape Tribulation which is a slightly different route!

So Daintree Village or Cape Trib (which is part of Daintree National Park)?

Sunpalm Transport also does a shuttle run from Cairns to Cape Trib and locations north including Cooktown as per the website..

sunpalmtransport.com/Cairns_Port_Douglas_Tra…

links to the schedules. Compare costs of shuttle vs hire car - the driving bit is not as hard as you might think. Just take some extra time to stay alert and go with the flow of the traffic.

Being north americans as well we found the driving on the "wrong side" quite easy. Only takes a bit of time getting used to it. You do need a car for this area for convenience.
