Money Query

I've seen other posts on the forum regarding money. Is there a bank/money exchange near the CHD, and is the exchange rate favourable taking the estimate at 170 Rupees per £ sterling?

Also as a smoker, are you allowed duty free cigs into Sri Lanka without hidden "Extras" on arrival at Colombo?

Hi there...

On Ciggies only, no tobacco products are allowed into Sri Lanka, except one or two open packs per person for personal use.

You can buy them at your hotel or local shops, but do not be tempted to buy from touts/beach sellers, they will most likely be fakes...

Exchange rate fluctuates like anywhere else, but now it is aorund 175 Rupees to the Pound, was as high as 250 Rupees not that long ago, the Rupee is closely tagged to the US Dollar, so if Pound goes down against Dollar, then you get fewer Rupees.. , but been reasonable stable recently.

The nearest banks to CHD are in Negombo. There could be a money changer (jewellery shop) near CHD.

Always remember to get a receipt as that will be need in case you need to re-exchange surplus Rupees at the airport on departure.

Don't worry about bringing cigarettes with you, except for a couple of packets to see you through until you can buy some.

They are very cheap in S.L. and I thought they were quite good.
