Currency etc

I have read different advice about which currency to take and was intending to take rupees and use a card for trips. Then I read that sterling can be used.

Any advice would be welcome. We would be interested in the night out that includes the temple at Kanda and the elephant sanctuary and a night's stay in Colombo driven by a local from the Dolphin. Any adviice about who we should approach for the trip and the cost of these trips would be welcome as well as that which we should include and exclude.

I use a wheelchair but can walk but that rarely stops us from trips when abroad.

Hi there,

a) NEVER bring rupees from UK as the price is horrible and the limit is 5,000, very low. Bring sterling (or euro or whatever) and exchange to rupee in Lanka.

b) Do NOT try to pay with sterling etc. in Lanka; the shop/hotel will often accept but, in real Davish language ;-), at a rate that suits them far more than it will suit you. See a), exchange at a Lankan bank or licensed changer.

Can't see what would be interesting in a night stay in Colombo. The town is only 90-120 min drive from Waikkal, so a decent day trip for shopping. Pinawela and Kandy together indeed is an overnighter.

Transport cost: Colombo Rs 3,500-4,000, Pinawela/Kandy Rs 10,000, per car. Entrance fees Pinawela/Kandy together per person Rs 3,000-4,000 depending on what you want to see, add the guesthouse or hotel. Contact the CHD tours desk _and_ some of the local beach boys and compare price and quality...

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

Hi again,

As you're from UK it is

"Bring _sterling_ and exchange to rupee in Lanka"

The euro or dollar or Swiss franc etc. is for locals of those countries, the general rule is to bring one's own 'strong' currency to Lanka (unfortunately not Indian rupee for instance) and exchange to rupee there.

All the best,

4. Re: Currency etc

Hi,

As you are coming from UK, Pound Sterling will be the right answer. Cash, travellers cheques (some banks issue them free), or cards.

Hans
