We will be visiting WA in December of 2011 and were wondering whether the wheat harvest would be going on then.
Edited: 13 years agoShould be, everyone aims to finish before Christmas. But it's not terribly exciting, not much to see really. A few farmers still stook their hay which makes for a nice photo, that's about it otherwise, just lots of harvesters tonking around the paddocks stripping the wheat.
Edited: 13 years agoBy "harvesters" I mean big machines, not humans :-)
"harvesters tonking around the paddocks stripping the wheat" Great description here is a picture of said harvester tonking.

We wil be in Perth around the middle of December and would like to drive out and view the harvest as that is our line of work at home. How far is it to the wheat growing area around York from Perth? Are most of the farms family run businesses?
It's an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half to York itself, and then it depends on what farm you're visiting. Yes, most farms are family owned. I doubt any would be thrilled if you just rocked up, but if you like I could enquire of a few friends if they're up for visitors. If so, I'll be away for the next couple of weeks so don't expect a reply soon.
