We enjoyed an alfresco lunch at Jules Cafe. The York Mill market was interesting too.

York is an extremely small town in the wheatbelt region of WA around 2hrs east of Perth. Its main claim to fame is its colonial past. Being one of the first settlements in this state, it still has many of the original buildings standing including one or two very fine pubs, the local town hall, court house and a number of other attractions. York also has a small motor museum of some note with some fine vintage cars and bikes to see.

You will find a number of places to eat according to the time of day you are there but probably for cafe style meals "The Bugatti" in the main street is the most popular place. Pub meals are also on offer at most times as well as the usual pizza shop and other smaller shops.

It's quite dry throughout the region at the moment but there are one or two sightseeing opportunities nearby mostly centred around York's history and early settlement. Pick a cooler day to head up that way if you are here during our summer months, it can often be significantly hotter than Perth some days.

You can take a drive up to the look out at the top of Mt Brown and there is a motor museum in town if you like vintage cars. For meals Settlers House in a courtyard off the main street has old world charm and so does the York Mill. Food is just average though and you may get better choice and value in one of the hotels.

I live in York and if you asked me where I would get lunch it would be Jules Deli in the main street. The food is freshly made, good vegetarian options, and it's yummy. It's small but you can get your food to take away and picnic elsewhere if you like.

RollyB, you must drive a very slow car if it takes you two hours to get here. It's 96km from the GPO in Perth, so about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours from just about anywhere in the metro area. I also wouldn't describe it as "extremely" small, admittedly it's not huge but with a population of 3,000+ it's bigger than a lot of country towns.

"The usual pizza shop" is only open Thursday to Sunday so it may not be open when the OP is here. Similarly Bugatti's Cafe has limited nights when it opens for dinner. The Golden York Chinese restaurant is pretty good for dinner, open every night except Tuesday. The Castle Hotel is variable in meal quality. Haven't managed to have lunch at either the Mill since the new owners took over or a new place opposite the Castle Hotel but they look promising.

When are you coming, jontymanu?
