We are spending the evening of my birthday in York and, naturally, want to celebrate with a nice meal. Any recommendations? Don’t mind driving a bit to get somewhere!
Well I think you e posted in the wrong York unless you’re planning on heading to a small town in Western Australia
You've picked a warm time of year to be visiting, but we were out there a month or so back and quite enjoyed our meal at The York Palace Hotel.
I've checked the nights they have dinner, and it appears to be only Thursday to Saturday. -
YorkFoodie will be along shortly & she knows good food
Yorkfoodies house is the best meal in town !
I have to admit I don't go out to eat dinner here in town and haven't for years. (Thanks PP :-) ). We've had some excellent restaurants here over the years but they don't seem to last. I guess the general clientele here isn't terribly discerning and is happy to pay less for lesser quality meals. :-(
Ladies at my book club the other night said they had eaten at Settler's House recently and it wasn't good, so I'd avoid that. I would also avoid "Mad Mo's" for similar reasons. The York Hotel might be OK- I haven't heard any bad reports-but I find their menu uninspiring, since I can do all of it at home.
I knew they were working on the Palace with a view to reopening it - a new group has purchased it after its closure by the previous owner who was neither welcoming or evidently able to hire a decent chef from the two meals I are there- but I hadn't realised it was up and running.
If Sue C enjoyed her meal there I'd go with that.
Thanks! Will email and check opening times
Oops! Talking it over with DH I realise I have confused The Palace and the Imperial,- probably because no one here calls it "the Palace" :-) I would still say if Sue enjoyed it, it is probably your best bet. I just find the menu "pub food"-ish and dishes I can make at home for less.
