Best Hiking near Cherokee/Grocery Store?

Hi! My family and I are headed to camp in Cherokee in about a week. Are there hikes in the area that you would recommend. We'd like to go into the park, but are open to anything! Also, is there a grocery store in Cherokee so we can stock up on camping supplies? Thanks so much!

There is a Food Loin grocery store in Cherokee. It is located on 441 on the south side of the town near the casino. In the park there are several trails for hiking. They will have information at the visitor's center at the old farm museum as enter the park on 441. Also there is the river trail which starts at 441 and Big Cove road. This is about 3/4 a mile along the river to the old farm museum.

I would recommend that you drive from Cherokee to the old farm museum in the afternoon between 7 and dark. We where up there last week for 3 days and each afternoon there would be several elk in the fields eating. On one day there was 22 or 24 elk in the 2 fields.

As John said above, there is a Food Lion on Hwy441. GSNP has many trails available and sites for you to hike to. The Deep Creek area just down the road from Cherokee in Bryson City has several nice trails and waterfalls to explore. This area can be alittle crowed though compared to other hikes in the area. The Cataloochee area of the GSNP, entrance off Cove Creek Rd, just a few miles north of Maggie Valley, also has several trails, where you can explore an old Mtn. Valley settled years ago with several old homesteads, churches etc that have been preserved by the NP service. You also get the chance to see the NC elk herd in this area. And of course the BRPWY also has many trails for you to choose from. While in Cherokee don't miss Mingo Falls and Soco Falls.

I agree with all of the above. Depending on the ages of your kids, at any gift shop at GSNP, there are Junior Ranger guidebooks. If you complete several activities, your kids can be certified junior rangers. It was a nice way to keep kids engaged and have them complete activities. One of the hikes that is suggested river trail that starts at the old farm museum. Also, check out the GSNP website for free ranger demonstrations.

If you decide to see nature in a different way, tubing with the http://cherokeerapids.com/ is great fun as you travel down river that parallels the river trail. It is definitely a fun ride that can be done with kids of all ages...I did it with my 6 and 10year old. Island Park, located in Cherokee, is another way to cool off.
