Advice Pls - Small family getaway for Memorial Day

We have never explored the mountains South or West of Asheville and thought we should take advantage of the 3 day weekend for Memorial Day. It is last minute and our options are limited. We thought about Lake Lure but someone said we should look at areas near Bryson City. We want a cabin with 2 (or more) bedrooms. Waterview (lake, creek or river). Just 2 adults and a child - maybe our cat depending on the rental and its policy. I heard the Nantahala area is a good starting point but then someone said to search Lake Fontana. I could use ideas, advice, anything to help narrow our search. THANK YOU in advance!

Well none of those are bad choices. What would you like to do in the area? Are you wanting to be on a lake and go boating? (Lake Lure, Lake Fontana) Are you wanting easy access to the Smokies or to ride the train (Bryson City). Creeks are ubiquitous in the mountains so don't think you need to be right on a lake to get that water view. If you want cooler temps, you want higher elevations. It will still be pretty hot around Lake Lure, but if you get up above around 3000 feet or so (like where Blowing Rock and Boone are if you've been there) it will be a lot cooler.

Other places to consider are the Brevard area and the Highlands and Cashiers areas.

You can look here on TA and use the filters to include a water view:
