Aix de Provence to St Emilion

Greetings fellow travellers

OK So we are in Aix in September 2012 and want to get to St Emilion by bus or train on 1st October.

Any ideas, advice, how long it will take, etc.

Happy travelling

From Aix-en-Provence (not Aix de Provence) to St Emilion is more than 600 km. By car, the journey would be well over 6 hours.

There are almost no long-distance bus services in France, and the train services mainly radiate out from Paris. To get from Aix to St Emilion by train, SNCF suggests you should travel to Paris Gare de Lyon, travel by metro to Paris Gare Montparnasse, travel to Libourne, and change there for St Emilion. Travel time is 8 to 10 hours.

You might want to reconsider your plans.

If you went by some more geographically direct route eg via Narbonne, Toulouse and Bordeaux it would take longer.

You could fly from Marseille to Bordeaux in 1 hour, from where by bus into the city then train to St Emilion is about 2 hours.

Greetings and Thank you.

Fly/bus/train sounds like the way to do this trip. We arrive in Paris on 1st September and will not need to fly Aix-Bordeaux until 1st October.

Do we have enough time to book the flight in France or should we do it before we leave from Australia, Any advice on which airline- if there is a choice?

Regards

David

Options -

You can drive from Paris to Bordeaux.

584 km, 6 hours 15 mins A10

or you can take the train. There is a high-speed TGV train that runs from Paris Montparnasse to Bordeaux that leaves about every two hours.

or just fly between the two destinations with Air France or easyjet.

If you are 100% sure of your travel plans, it would no no harm to book any internal flights at the earliest opportunity. You will also get the cheapest fares but beware that as is normal the very cheapest may be non-refundable and non-exchangeable.

Similarly on the long distance trains. Reservations open 90 or 120 days before travel. There are no reservations or advance ticket purchase for the local trains between Bordeaux and St Emilion.

Thanks again for all the advice

While we are sure of our dates, and bookings, just in case of the unexpected we will book refundable.

While we are on this subject we arrive in Paris in early September and then go to Avignon, Aix, St Emilion and our last stay will be at Loches, before we have to get back to Paris to fly home to Australia. Presume the best way to do the Paris / Avignon & Loches / Tours / Paris trips will be the same as the Aix / St Emilion trip either fly and/ or train. We are staying in an apartment near Montparnasse in Paris.

Any advice which is the best / easiest choice. We like simple. No rush no hurry.

Kind Regards
