Currency in Zanzibar

Hi all.

Looking for a definitive answer on money in Zanzibar please.

Is it best to use us dollars, or swap for Tanzanian Shillings when we arrive?

As far as I can tell Stone town appears to be the only place to exchange and we will be staying in the north of the island?

Many thanks in advance for your help.

Normally dollars are used. However, for small purchases in bazaars or markets, shillings are required. Change a few dollars in shillings, just what you need for these purchases.

Yes, you can change the currency in Stone Town, but hotels also offer this service.

Diego, 1$ = 2.285 shillings (today's change)

You can change the currency at the airport, or at one of the many Bureau De Change in Stone Town.
