Canoeing or flyfishing in October

Hello -- we are going to be in the area in early October and are tryign to figure out what to do. We'll be there two nights. One of our group loves to fly fish but the others haven't tried it before (including our 8 year old son -- who is interested in learning). The others all love canoeing. Any suggestions for a good place to stay with fly fishing or canoeing and would one be better than the other in the Catskills in October? Thanks!

I think you need to make some calls. Its not clear who got flooded out by the hurricane and will not reopen this season. I personally like Phoenicia and Roscoe for flyfishing, but don't do any canoeing in the Catstills. You might want to think about the Adirondacks. Many areas did not get hit as hard and its easier to find flyfishing streams near ponds and lakes. Another poster recently stayed at a cottage on Silver lake that sounded nice. They found it in ADKbyowner.com
