Safety/suitability of Hout Bay

We are planning to visit Cape Town and the peninsula for 7 nights next April. We are two women and would appreciate some advice on how safe places are as a base, in order for us to work out the most suitable location for accommodation.

Initially we were thinking of a city centre apartment in Cape Town, but it was suggested to us that Camps Bay might be better. We looked into it but found it a bit expensive. We have found a more affordable apartment next to the beach in Hout Bay, so wondered if anyone could tell us if this is more or less safe than staying in Cape Town? We would appreciate advice on e.g. whether it is safe to walk to restaurants in the evening.

Many thanks

Here's a timely update for anyone thinking of staying in Hout Bay. A few days ago an occupied luxury villa on Hunters Way in Hout Bay was broken into by 3 armed men. The 6 British occupants (5F 1M) were threatened with machetes & robbed of £80,000 worth of jewellery & personal belongings. Access was gained by cutting through a wire fence.

Apparently belatedly the property now has proper security. Fortunately the guests escaped without physical harm but all are undergoing therapy for PTS.

Hi I agree with Paul g we have just returned from 2 weeks, one in Hout Bay and one in Sea Point Hout Bay is fab and a must but you can visit on the hop on hop off bus if you don't want to drive.. for 2 women on their own I would suggest Sea Point it's lively and a lot more open and busy than Houts Bay and cheaper than Camps Bay with loads of restaurants and places to drink security is paramount to the locals but they are lovely and offer good advice which you should take there is a place in Sea Point called Mojo Market it's unbelievable for eating and drinking. It was our first time to SA and cant wait to go back to this magical place and it's people . Hope you find something suitable I don't think staying in the City would be good but with Sea Point you have Camps Bay Clifton Beach and a variety of resorts within a stones through. Enjoy though as I'm sure you will .
