You'll be surrounded by foliage, and pretty much any ride on a back road should be nice. However, I have to admit I'm not really familiar with Pittsburgh. If you want an extended drive, you could go down through Franconia Notch and do the Kancamagus Highway. Don't do this on a weekend, though (major traffic), and it's a pretty long way. Closer by, Dixville Notch is beautiful. To see the high mountains, though, you need to go south.

Pittsburg is near Lake Francis close to the Maine - Canada border.Depending on the foliage you may need to drive further south at that time of the fall. Check the NH foliage web sites for info and color charts of the regions.

The drive up through the Connecticut Lakes (rte. 3 past Pittsburg) is beautiful any time. You might be a little bit past prime foliage in early October, but do check foliage web sites for updates. Find an old dirt road or path to walk along, that's a nice way to view the Fall color. If you bring your passport you can take rte. 3 into Quebec and enjoy the foliage and scenery (and food!) up there, too. You will also likely be treated to many moose sightings.
