Hey everyone, im back from a wonderful experience in Vegas with my husband, Nate. It was his first time ever going, and my 4th trip. I am quite the spoiled bioootch as this was my 3rd time in less than a year ( my 1st trip was when i was 22, im 30 now) I had gone last July with 3 girlfriends of mine, and went in October with my aunt and cousin. So when i was feeling the "itch" to go again, i thought it would be nice to let the husband come this time I know, im generous, what can i say. Hee hee.
The adventure started on Wednesday Feb 23rd when my husband got off work at noon after working 21 hours straight. Our furry babies were staying with 2 different friends of mine. The basset hound <Bubba> went with one, and the 2 kittens went with the other. After getting the death glare of " I cant believe you are LEAVING me" three stinking times, i swallowed the lump in my throat and told myself the furry babies would be just fine without us for a week! So then we packed up all our crap, and me, my husband, and our daughter were off to Minnesota. The glee of leaving only lasted about an hour as the reality of our 9 hour drive settled in. OMG, i hate the drive. North Dakota is SOOOO boring. But i survived and pulled into the in-laws place about midnight. Thursday was filled with the primping of pre-vegas must do's. Nails done-check. Hair cut-check. Spend precious time with my daughter-check. Friday started at 5am, gee am i excited?? Spent the first couple hours patiently waiting for Nate to arise, and when i say patient, i mean making lots of noise and accidentally nudging him fifteen hundred times. Go to my parents house, which is a whoppin 9 miles away from my in-laws, to have breakfast and drop off the child. I got away with not crying this time, as my daughter ruined our mommy daughter moment of tearful goodbye with the words "Mom, Dad, can you please just go to Vegas, i want to start my fun with Grandma and Grandpa!!" So cynical for a 5 year old. Sheesh, fine, im leaving, and i wont miss you at all....*Sniff sniff* Ok, maybe i had a tear or two, but at least it didnt turn in the ugly cry like i usually do.
Stop at the bank, get our $$$ and off we go to Minneapolis. Oh cripes. More driving. Seriously. So after 3 hours of torture we finally arrive.Check in, and then i proceed to inhale as much Vitamin N that my lungs can handle. I know, gross, but hey whatever. Im smoking as i write this too, HA! Anyway, like you care....ok so we get on the plane....and WOW, did i grow? These seats are so very tiny. Damn you SunCountry. My poor husband of 6'4" and 300 pounds was a little cramped. Yeah, like a lot cramped. And then the lady in front of him, and me proceed to recline their seats. Sweet. As im getting THE LOOK from Nate i smile sweetly and say its only 3 1/2 hours.......ARGH....make that 4 1/2 hours. Stupid wind. Stupid pilot. Needless to say, by the time we landed i have never wanted to get off a plane so bad in my life. But hey WE ARE IN VEGAS BABY!!!
Friday Evening- Oh the wonderful smells!
We get off the plane, get our bags, and i run out to have my first heavenly whiff of my happy place! *Sigh* Oh Vegas, i love you. After my brief love affair, we go to the shuttle to go to Alamo. The driver picks up one of my suitcases, and breaks my damn handle in half. What the 'eff!? No worries, im in a good mood, so i will let it slide. Off to Alamo, and get our Dodge Charger with our lovely GPS that i insisted we needed. And only after 16 wrong turns, we make it to the Flamingo, or as my husband promptly re-named it, the Flaming O.
Check-in line wasnt bad, i had 5 nights comped in a GO Room with a strip view. Smoking. Ah scratch that. Im sorry ma'am there arent any smoking rooms available. First of all, please dont call me ma'am. I realize i have no make up on and my hair is a little dishelved but please im only 21...er ok im 30, but still!!! Fine, give me the non smoking room (like i had a choice) My room was completely free, so i only bitched a little......
We had room 15104, used the elevators by the Habitat. No surprises, as i had seen pics online on what the Go Room looked like. Unloaded our crap, took a shower, and headed downstairs! We were starving, so we discovered Johnny Rockets @ the food court, got it to go, and ate up in our room. It was delicious. Then before heading back down, we opened our first "present" that our friends had sent with us. We had one for each day we were there. They called our trip our "hornymoon" as we didnt get a honeymoon, and we are now trying for a second child. My girlfriends are like my cheerleaders for ovulation. Heres a pic of our goodies, ill let your imagination go to town on what are in all of them. Oh, and i didnt take them on my carry on, i put them in the checked luggage, for fear of hearing the words from the TSA- "please step to the side, we need to go over some things with you"
After eating and opening our present, we went down and sat at Sin City Bar and decided to play VP. After having a pina coloda and hitting 4 deuces wild, i went in search of my elusive Monopoly Advance to Boardwalk. My favorite game!! I practically run to the spot to be re-acquainted with my old friend, and what the??.....where???? OMG THEY TOOK MY MACHINES OUT! Oh flamingo i thought we were going to have a wonderful relationship, your yummy tropical smell cant fix this one. GRRR. So then after tromping through the whole casino TWICE i sit down at a Lord of the Rings machine. I only pout a little, and remind myself i have 4 more days to search other places for my beloved Monopoly game. Ok, im over it. Yeaa, im gambling, and smoking, and im in Vegas. All is right in the world again. Nate found me and played next to me for awhile, then announced he was tired and going to bed. What?? Its only like 2am. Knowing full well i wasnt moving my butt, he kissed me goodnight and left me to my degenerate habit. About 20 minutes later, i finally get the bonus, i choose the fireworks one, and YES, 1385.00 handpay! Thank you! The guy that verified the handpay says oh MN huh? ( i refuse to change my license to north dakota, even though we haved lived there for a year and a half) I tell him, yes, technically ND, but yup born and raised in MN. Turns out he is from Brainerd which is only about 20 minutes from where i grew up. Small world. Chatted with him for awhile, tipped him 85, and skipped back to my room with my hundies where i promptly jumped on my husband to show him my cash Put the money in the safe, and went back down, gambled until 5am, and then called it a night. 24 hours is a good first day!
Saturday- Christmas in February??
I woke up at 930am to find the husband still sleeping! We are wasting precious Vegas time, LETS GO! While i ran around the room getting ready, Nate was moving the speed of a turtle on a sunday afternoon stroll. Really man, you are killing me! After what seemed like hours we head downstairs, decide to eat @ the food court, because A) We were hungry and didnt want to wait long for food and B) Because i am an impatient b!tch and wanted to get going. So after dodging the timeshare vultures (their booth was right outside the habitat elevators, how convenient) we went to eat. I had pizza an caesar salad at whatever the pizza place there is called-starts with a B. Good pizza, bad salad. Nate had chili cheese fries, and a hot dog @ Nathans. I know, classy folk we are huh. Dont worry, we do eat at some normal restaurants this trip.
Off we go to the outlet mall south of the strip. Told the GPS to suck it, as i knew where i was going this time. Ha! Get inside and i am crouched and ready for the Coach purse store. I was determined to get a kickass purse. First stop, Nike store, where Nate found some shoes, which he ended up wearing the rest of vacation, then the Lids store. Nate found 2 hats he liked. Then he found a Nautica wallet. And finally....YES THE COACH store, i was damn excited. But unfortunately i did not find a purse i loved. I so tried, but failed. Time to go, as the mall was filling up fast, and we had other things to do today. Walked out of the mall, heres Nate carrying 3 bags, and me with...none??!! Well damn thats a first!! Quick stop at the Flamingo to drop off our (nates) bags, and look for my coupons i swore i left in my room....oops they were in my wallet the whole time.
Alright, after our brief stop, we head towards Gold Coast in search of cowboy coffee for my aunt. She loves that stuff, and couldnt find it back in October. So being the great niece that i am, i found it and bought it. Oh and on the way i saw the CUTEST accessory on a vehicle. It was a hot pink car ( i think a volvo) with EYELASHES on its headlights. I wish i had gotten a picture, but the GPS was yelling at me to turn, so no evidence of the girly eyelash car. But it was cool. Trust me. Anyway, after finding the cowboy coffee, i felt i deserved some gambling time. And Nate being the wonderful husband he is, obliged. He normally doesnt gamble AT ALL, but this trip he actually gambled a lot, and never griped about it. I think he secretly is addicted now. Im so proud! Of course i didnt find my Advance to Boardwalk, so i settled for Alice in Wonderland. We each put in a hundie, and played the same 2 machines for about 2 hours. Nate came out even, and i came out 40 ahead. I cant say i love this machine, i never played it the rest of the trip, the bonus games are hard to get anything big, but it was entertaining for awhile. By now our tummys are growling, and its time to head for the Silverton. We wanted to go there so Nate could see the man store-aka-Bass Pro Shop-, see the aquarium, and i also had 2 for 1 buffet coupons and 20 dollar free play from the ACG.
After taking a wrong turn (thank you GPS) we came back around, and went the right way, while listening to the GPS "recalculating, recalculating" It became our mission to mess with GPS the rest of the trip. We enter the Silverton, and i take a big sniff...whats that...do i smell....omg it smells like CHRISTMAS in here....I kept looking for Santa Claus, but no luck. We go and sign up for players card, and he gives us 2 free buffets, plus 10 bucks more with our 20 dollar free play. Sweet. Told you it was Christmas here. So we skip over to the buffet clutching our free coupons, and refrained from yelling out excuse me, excuse me, free buffets coming through, high rollers here..... Dont worry, we didnt, remember, we are classy folk. Classy people dont brag. Well, apparently there was a lot of high rollers as the line went sooooo slooooow. I was so hungry i was eyeing the little child in front me as an appetizer...ooh wait he has booogers, gross. The buffet was a lot smaller than the strip buffets, but for free it was pretty good. They had crab legs, and other various seafood. Apparently it was steak and wine night, but i didnt partake in that. After our bellies were full, we waddled out to the casino and i sent Nate off to the man store, and i did what i do best. Plop my butt down and do some serious gambling. Of course i didnt find my monopoly, so i settled for a different version. I dont remember what it was called, but i know it has a very loud sucking sound to it. 300 bucks later, i was feeling a bit resentful, so i went to lick my wounds at WOZ Ruby Slippers. Well, Dorothy, you'e a b!tch too. Luckily Nate was done at the man store, and found me. We went to marvel at the aquarium. It was beautiful!
After staring at the fishies for awhile, we decided to head back home to the Flaming O. On the way out i looked for Santa to tell him Mr. Monopoly and Dorothy belonged on the naughty list, but he must have been on break, cuz i didnt see him
Saturday Cont (still!!) Sheesh, im long winded, sorry!
We got back to the Flaming O with no wrong turns this time, i think the GPS felt sorry for us this time. We decided to get out of the hotel, and explore. We walked to Seredipity so i could try the Frozen Hot Chocolate. Very yummy, but only could finish half of it, even with Nates help. Walked down to Cosmopolitan. I was so excited to see it. Came out feeling disappointed. I know im in the minority with this opinion, but i dont really like it in there. Now mind you we went on a Saturday night, so everyone was out dressed to the nines, it was super busy in there, im sure that contributed to my feelings of dislike. Next time i go to Vegas, i will give it another try, maybe during the week in the afternoon or something. Went to the Bellagio and checked out the conservatory Year of the Rabbit. Not my favorite, but still interesting to see. Went around the corner to see the big chocolate fountain i had never gotten around to seeing the past times. Cool! Wanted to a sweet treat, but still too full from Silverton. Walked down to the fountains, and could feel some raindrops. As we waited for the next show to start, the wind picked up and blew across the lake, er fountain, pond, whatever it is. Everyone else was shivering, while Nate and i took a deep breath and i fell in love with winter in Vegas. Such a surreal moment as the fountains started with my favorite fountain song (time to say goodbye i think?) I stared in wonder, and thought to myself, this never gets old, and i do think this was my best moment. Nate took a video and when it was over, we walked hand in hand, fully content. And i remembered how lucky i am to have such a great marriage and i love my life. We may not be the "short dress, dripping in diamonds, reeking of money" type of couple like the ones at the Cosmopolitan but im happy with who we are and feel truly blessed.
We headed back to the Flamingo and stopped at Caesars for some silly pictures. Gambled a bit, and headed to bed.
Sunday-The tasting of new things
Slept in until about 10am. This morning Nate moved a little faster this time, probably with fear that i would explode. Took another silly pic on our way out.
Walked over to Margaritaville, Nate bought a couple shirts..me..nothing. What the hell. Had a fabulous lunch!! We tried the Ahi Tuna Toastadas for an appetizer
I had a chicken sandwich and Nate had Jumbolaya (sp?) Our server was wonderful, we were tempted to try the fun drinks they had, but we had the car still, so we settled for pop.
Got on the road again, heading to the Springs Preserve. Of course the b!tch GPS got us lost, and by the time we found where we were supposed to be, the GPS showed we were in the middle of the desert, and where we were didnt exist. Huh. Silly GPS. Whatever. Well, we spent about 2 hours walking around the maze of boring preserve. Ick, its filled with knowledge, and you have to read stuff, and learn about things. My brain hurt and my eyes started to glaze over. Im kind of like an ostrich, im attracted to shiny things, and there was nothing shiny there. I was not sorry to leave.
We decided to drop the car off a little early, as we were getting tired of having it. Drop off went well, no issues. Was quite happy with Alamo, i will rent from them again.
We took a cab to downtown from the rental place. Hello Fremont! Did a little shopping and then stopped at Mermaids to get the heart attack. I mean, the deep fried twinkie, and oreos.
I could hear my arteries already starting to close by just looking at it.
But i ignored them, and ate it anyway. Probably took 5 years off my life, but it was worth it!
Went to 4Queens, where i had a coupon for 2 for 1 entree, but again, as i signed up for a players card, they gave me a voucher for the same. So why did i buy the ACG again lol?? Oh well, i have them for next time. Had a nice meal, we both had the half rack of ribs. Solid meal for only 15 bucks (plus tip) Not bad!
Wanted to check out Golden Nugget, as i had never gone in there, despite my past trips to Fremont. Signed up for a players card, received 5 dollars free play, which by the way, never worked. Found my Advance to Boardwalk but it was in nickels!! Needless to say my hundie didnt last long. Dropped another hundie in some version of WOZ that i had never seen. Never got the bonus, so im going to say it sucked. Walked around, debated doing the zipline, but decided against it since i knew Nate was over the weight limit. He wanted me to do it, but im saving it for my next trip with my girlfriends. Took a cab back to the strip, i hate the bus, so im willing to spend the $ to take a cab instead.
We wanted to explore some more so we headed north, checking out Harrahs, Casino Royale, and on the way back stopped in at O'Sheas. Nate loved that place. I gambled, and he drank and smoked a cigar he purchased there. Watched a drunk girl with a hula hoop for awhile. I counted 12 people she hit with that damn thing. It was amusing to me, since i wasnt one of the ones getting hit. Made our way back to Flamingo, i gambled, and Nate got a burger @ Johnny Rockets. He kissed me goodnight and headed to the room. I gambled until about 530am with no luck.
Monday- Carrots make me giggle
Got up around 9am. This day i was not moving so fast. I think i need to go to the gym before my next trip. Finally trudged out of the room, muttering hateful things to the timeshare vultures. Got a coffee at the Pink Bean, man i love that place, and felt human again. Bought some souvenirs for my friends (yes, i finally bought something!) including some adorable flamingo pajamas for my daughter. Then we headed to Hash House A Go Go. No line, got seated right away! Score! Decided to share the Sage Chicken and Bacon Waffles, and a side of fries. It was strange. But good. I will for sure eat there again! Found the Auto Collections, so Nate could have a manly moment drooling over all the vehicles. I managed to get through it without my eyes completely glazing over.
And from there we just walked south checking out the sights on the way. Stopped in at the Sugar Factory. I wanted one of those cotour suckers, until they told me the price. 25 bucks!! What? For a bedazzled sucker stick?? No thanks. Damn it, im still pissed thinking about them. I still want one. Maybe next trip. For some reason i was feeling cheap that afternoon, and couldnt bring myself to buy one. Stopped and rested for awhile, and called my parents and daughter. After hearing her little voice, i got homesick for her so i distracted myself with a slushie from Fat Tuesdays. GOOD LORD, im not 21 anymore, i suck at drinking in my old age. I couldnt even handle half of it. Sheesh. What a loser!
Walked through NYNY, i hadnt been in there since my first trip back in 2002. I had heard they de-themed it, and yes, yes they did. I hated it. Grabbed a pretzel to share and bought some gummy penis's for one of my girlfriends Oh and i bought a giant gummy bear for my daughter too. Turns out giant doesnt mean yummy, she had two bites and was done with it. But seeing her eyes light up when i gave it to her was worth it. Went and checked out Excalibur, another place i had never been. Eh, it was ok. Stopped at Starbucks, and did the oxygen bar with a massage. Wouldve been relaxing if the chick hadnt tried hard-selling us on the massage products, god, she didnt SHUT UP the whole time. Yes, i was getting crabby, and my whole body hurt by now.
Went to the Luxor, had a snack @ the Food Court, and hung out, and tried to get un-crabby. Gambled for a bit, but no luck, and no fun. I really wanted to just lay down by this point, but we had tickets for Carrot Top. Went in to the show tired and crabby, came out refreshed and in a GREAT mood!!! I absolutely LOVED that show, Nate and i were laughing so hard we were crying! We had awesome seats, front row, so close we could touch Carrot Top. And when he came out, he looked right at Nate and said "Hey dude!" And gave him a high five! I am so glad we went, i cant recommend it enough. Im going again with my girlfriends next trip!!
Feeling refreshed we walked all the way back to Flamingo after the show laughing and re-living all the funny moments from the show. Gambled only a little bit, and then headed to bed. Tomorrow was our Baja Chase early in the morning!!
Tuesday-Am i dead???!!
Rise and shine nice and early @ 7am! Got ready and headed downstairs for something light to eat. Both had granola an yogurt, and shared a bear claw. Found the north shuttle entrance and waited for SunBuggy to come pick us up. Right on time at 9am he pulled up and greeted us. Got on the bus with 4 other people, and we all chatted on the way out to the Dunes. Pulled up to the shop, and we picked out our gear.
Off we went out in the middle of nowhere where our dune buggys were waiting. Went over some safety tips, yadda yadda, and then got strapped in. I opted to "ride with the guide" instead of driving my own, or riding with Nate. Ya know, so if i died at least we would have somebody else to blame instead of myself or my husband. And we were off!!!!!!!!!!!!! We basically tore through the desert!! He would go straight up a sand dune, and couldnt see the other side until we were in the air looking down at it! I felt like a damn bobble head and didnt know whether to laugh or cry. But after about 10 minutes i was having a good time, and even put my hands up when we went down the dunes like we were on a roller coaster! The chase lasted 30 minutes, and it was a BLAST! Nate and i were both glad we experienced it! Then the shuttle dropped us back off @ the Flamingo. Totally worth it, and would do it again!
We were pretty hungry by then so we walked up to the Fashion Show Mall, and decided to eat @ El Segundo. Had the guacomole for an appetizer. It was a heavenly experience. I had the poblano and grilled corn crisper, and Nate had chicken fajitas. Fantastic! Nate kept feeding the little birdies, and i told him to stop it, as i didnt want to get crapped on. Well, turns out the guys behind us did, so Nate finally stopped feeding them. Classy remember??
Walked over to the Wynn, because i knew they had (or at least had in the past) my Advance to Boardwalk. And yes, Steve didnt disappoint. Right where they were supposed to be. Ha! Finally! Played for about an hour, but then started to feel a little ill. Uh oh. Maybe that was too much guac i ate. Bleh. Felt so bad, took the bus back to Flamingo instead of walking. Schlepped my way up to the room where i layed down and ended up sleeping until 930pm!! Nate was starving so he went down and got take-out chinese and brought it back up to the room. Oh my god. Really bad chinese. Tasteless. So disappointing. By then my tummy felt ok, but the rest of my body didnt. I was so sore and stiff i couldnt believe it. What the hell is wrong with me??!! My last night in Vegas!! AAAAHHH! I fought with myself for awhile, but eventually said F&%# it and went back to sleep calling myself a loser while i drifted off to dreamland. Nate went to bed too.
Wednesday- Last day in my happy place
I had requested a late checkout, but turns out we really didnt need it. We were out of the room by 10am. Checked our bags with the bell-hop, and went to explore. Our flight didnt leave until 7pm, so we had a lot of time before we had to leave for the airport.
Walked over to Caesars Palace to eat at Cheesecake Factory, one of the places on our list we wanted to try. Walked 500 miles (carrot top quote) and got there to find it didnt open until 11:10. WTF? Whatever, walked around for a bit, and by the time we came back they were opening. Got a table right out front. Enjoyed an appetizer of Dynamite Blasts (buffalo chicken in wontons deep fried) and each had a burger. Nate had the Memphis BBQ an i had the Double Cheese Crunch with a Kobe beef patty. Really good, couldnt finish it all.
Went over to the Mirage, and decided to walk through the Dolphin/Tiger Garden. Got to see the trainers do tricks with the dolphins, they were adorable. And saw a few of the big kitties. Made me miss my little kitties at home. Stood in line for 15 minutes at the gift shop to buy my daughter a book. Nice place, next time i think i want to do the VIP tour where you get a picture with a dolphin. Anyone know how much that costs?
Stopped at Starbucks and the Sugar Factory on the way out. Those 25 dollar suckers taunted me again, but i stayed strong and walked away with money in my pocket. Ha.
Strolled along, stopped at Carnival court where Nate bought some shirts with funny sayings on them, and i found a few more things for my girlfriends back home.
Got back to Flamingo, sat out in the habitat for about an hour, just enjoying Vegas. It was 67 degrees out, PERFECT. Was a little sad we were leaving, but not as depressed as i usually am. I think it was due to being there for longer than i usually go and my body was really sore. And i could feel sickness coming on.
Got our bags, and took a cab to the airport. Flight wasnt as bad coming back, as Nate asked if there was any exit seats open, and got one. I had the seat next to me open so i got to stretch out a bit. We got back to MN at midnight to the freezing cold. Gee, welcome back. And then to top it off we had left our dome light on, so our car was dead. Paid 40 bucks to get it jump started. LOL. Classy i tell ya. Drove 2 hours to my aunts house where my parents had dropped off my daughter earlier that day. Woke her up to give her hugs, she wasnt thrilled. Stayed up until about 430am chatting with my aunt. She loves Vegas almost, or maybe just as much as i do, and wanted to hear all the details. Woke up about 11am, my cousin came over to see us for a bit, had breakfast, then we were on our way back to North Dakota. The 9 hours were torture, as Nate and i got hit really hard with head colds. Im still sick today!!
thanks for the great tr. i love your sense of humor glad you had a great time.
