Who do I need to tip

This will seem a ridiculous question to most of you, but my DH and I are coming from New Zealand for 7 days in Vegas - (arrive on 8 November and I can't wait!)

I have never been to the States before (though lucky DH has) but really don't know who to tip.

Have done some searching on this forum and know it is about $1 per bag for luggage guys and I know we need to tip in restaurants (buffet or not) but do we need to tip cab drivers, barmen, CWs, dealers, slot attendants.

What about tour drivers (have 3 days in San Francisco afterwards and have some tours booked).

In NZ we have no tipping at all so this is totally foreign to us - and we don't want to offend.

And thanks to everyone for this great forum - have lurked in here for weeks and you are all responsible for my holiday plans (so they had better work out or I will bore you all with dreadful complaining and boring TRs)

Just come back from Vegas this week and found that more than ever people will drop hints when they expect a tip... we had one very rude waiter who even pointed out the place in the menu that mentioned gratuity was not included... needless to say we didnt tip him as much.

Basically the rule is if your getting a service, you should tip, a large amount if the service has been exceptional or a small amount if just ordinary.

So from the waiter who serves you food to the doorman that opens the door to a taxi they both expect a tip.

Not idiculous question and if I were coming to NZ would be asking same question. Type in the work tipping at the top of your post in the search box and you will be able to find lots of info on tipping from who to how much. Enjoy your trip.

Restaurants - tip once on the final bill, it's generally shared between the various people who served you, prepared your meal, etc. Start at 15%, go down for anything bad, go up for anything spectacular.

Shuttle - a dollar a bag is fair, more if they're personable or friendly.

Housecleaning - I leave a dollar or two whenever they do something we request, such as bring an extra towel. Or if you leave a big mess.

Taxi - depends on the fare.

You CAN tip for other services such as valet parking but I would say the people I mentioned are the ones not to forget.

"You CAN tip for other services such as valet parking"

Tipping for valet parking is (quite correctly) mandatory. If you fail to tip at a place you're not going to visit again than you'll get away with being called cheap. If you try it at the hotel where you're a guest, be prepared for a very long wait next time you need your car.

I tip as follows,

15-20% at restaurants, 10% at buffets.

$1/bag and 10% of fare to taxi,

$1/bag to bellman and possibly more depending on how helpful they are,

$1-2 if I call for housekeeping to bring something extra to my room,

$2-4 daily to housekeeper ( I also frequently put an individually wrapped candy with the tip and a note saying thank you to the housekeeper),

$1-2 to waitress in casino,

$2 to vallet, more if he helps load/unload bags.

Basically, I tip anyone who provides a service for me. I carry lots of $1 bills and keep them seperate from the rest of my money because it seems that I am always tipping somebody.

Enjoy your trip. Welcome to the USA.

A SMALL amount is service is ordinary....is not appropriate, a standard amount is. People working a long day and depending on tips should get them, it they get the job done. Not slobbering all over you like you're the prom queen is not a reason for a lesser tip

Nitpicking service or looking for excuses to cut the tip is mean spirited and arrogant

See the recent post:

Here is an interesting tip (no pun intended) according to AARPmagazine:

Americans are the world's biggest tippers.

35% of us who tip even when restaurant service is bad.

49% who feel pressure to leave a tip.

8 is the minimum % to tip.
