We are going to Yellowstone in June from Florida, never been out west. Any ideas for a great vacation? Any ideas in the area would be great
Whether you drive or fly, you need some basic information before you really begin your planning. The National Park Service has webpages of the kind of information you need to start. Once you have a basic plan, come back and we'll tweak it to get you the best vacation we can.
You'll probably get more responses if you post in the Yellowstone forum which is in the Wyoming section. There is lots of reference information there as well.
Post over there and tell us who is going (adults, kids, etc), how many days you've got, what interests you (if you know...lol) such as hiking, wildlife viewing, thermal features. I assume you are flying?
Here's some information we put together to help people plan Yellowstone visits. Might help you get oriented.
There's more information available on our Yellowstone home page. There's some sample itineraries too.
June can still seem like winter in Yellowstone. We got there around June 7 in 2008 and saw a good bit of snow. It warmed up by the end of the trip. You'll need to have layers to include at least light gloves and a hat that will keep the ears warm.Edited: 22 October 2010, 00:11
Some more criteria that are helpful to know...
- Fly or part of driving trip?
- Or do you want both as in fly to a major city (Denver, Billings or Salt Lake) and see some amazing places enroute to/from Yellowstone?
- As noted June can start really cold and be summer by end of month so exact time makes a big difference
- Special interests: History, Geography, Photography, Animal Viewing, Hiking, etc...
- Health or physical ability issues
- Mountain driving experience or willingness
- TIME available, one week, two weeks, more?
Having never been "out West" for me raises all sort of other questions or ideas about what your expectations might be. There's a lot more to the West than Yellowstone. Like going to Disneyworld and saying you've "seen" Florida - except a lot more so.
