July weather/RAIN!

We are coming in to town to camp on July 16th, leaving 22nd or 23rd. The weather forecast looks dismal! Is there always "a chance of thunderstorms" everyday in the summer? Or is it likely to be a rained out vacay for us? Is it usually just a quick 30 minute storm and then it's all good? Or rain all day? Thanks

1. Re: July weather/RAIN!

Well, much depends on exactly what sort of system produces the rain.

Historically, the MS Gulf Coast is prone to thunderstorms building off toward New Orleans, then moving through the area in the afternoon, producing rain, which usually clears out, after a bit.

However, there seems to be a flow of monsoonal moisture building from the far western end of the Gulf of Mexico, and even the Gulf of Baja. This has produced some longer rains, as much more moisture is drawn up, than just the typical Summer thunderstorms.

Will this patter continue? The best that one can do is consult a service, such as AccuWeather, to see what they are forecasting.

My brother called this weekend from Gulfport, and reported that the thunderstorms have lasted longer than usual, been heavier than usual over a larger area (usually only heavy in isolated spots), and instead of cooling things off, have left the air very hot and humid. Usually, due to the sandy soil, the actual Coast stays cooler than some near-by places, such as New Orleans, which has much heavier, organic soil, with less sand. Also, the Gulf breezes usually go quite a ways to cooling things down, but have not been in effect much lately.

Whether this sort of setup remains, or gives way to more typical Summer weather on the Coast, will remain to be seen. For the sake of your trip (and my brother's comfort) I hope that the more typical weather sets up.

Good luck,

Hunt
