If you have the time, consider taking the 40-minute drive north to Taylor's Falls. Interstate Park has some spectacular geological formations on both sides of the St. Croix River. The Dalles, potholes, etc. Glacial age wonderment.

Nice little town for lunch too. I'd get to Stillwater early, have breakfast there and wander a bit. Make the drive and do the hiking there. Different level trails. And you can get some unbelievable views from some parts (though usually the more basic trails). Don't neglect the Wisconsin side -- Lake O' the Dalles. Nice trails there, too.

Taylors Falls is a great suggestion. There's an Interstate State Park on both sides of the river, and if you want truly great hiking, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail starts on the Wisconsin side, www.iceagetrail.org. It's also smart to hit Stillwater early, before it gets congested.

If you want a more casual hike closer to Stillwater, there are three state parks with good hiking. The closest is William O'Brien, just north of Stillwater. To the south, there's Afton State Park. And across the St. Croix to the east, there's Willow River near Hudson, Wis.
