what to do in bath/phippsburg

I will be vacationing for 1 week in phippsburg first week of august. I have 3 kids (5,7,14) what are some area attractions besides the beach that might be good day trips for us? (especially if it rains!)

For more info on Phippsburg, pick up a copy of the Down East magazine that is about Phippsburg. I'm guesing it's on the newstands right now.

In addition to the fort that is at the end of Popham Beach, there is the also a series of forts built into the hillside up near the original Popham settlement

Beyond Phippsburg,

Maine Maritime Museum in Bath

There is a lovely library in Bath

Bath's downtown is nice and manageble.

bowling, multiplex movies in Brunswick

Artic Museum at Bowdoin College in Brunswick

You could take them to Big Al's on Route 1 north of Bath. It is like the ultimate dollar store (though things DO cost more than a dollar here, usually). Kids love it. You might even get a kick out of it, and you can get Maine souveniers by the bagful. He even gives stuff away when you check out.

A couple of thoughts for food too...

A fun thing, that is also kind of unique, is Fat Boy's Drive In in Brunswick. Super cheap, good eats and you can watch the planes come and go from the Naval Base across the street. You drive in, park and turn on your headlights. A waitress will come out to the car with menus and come back when you turn your lights on again. (Just remember to turn your lights off unless you need something to be kind to the running waitresses).

Also, in Bath my don't miss place is Beale Street BBQ. Oh MAN! You can smell if from the road and the food is FANTASTIC!

The Cabin in Bath (near the big Iron Works buildings) has great pizza and unique combos as well as some subs and pastas that never disappoint- and ooooh! The garlic knots! YUM!

My last spot is a little out of the way. It is called The Water's Edge and it is out past the Sebasco Estates. The food is not grand, but tasty and reasonable and the atmosphere is of a coastal shack, right on the water and out of the way. It just has a classic "feel" to it that I am drawn to every summer even though food wise I'd put it middle of the pack locally.

Enjoy your stay!

Hi lumom,

A daytrip to Boothbay Harbor might be fun as there's lots to do for all ages. Here are some suggestions:

Mini-golf; train ride at the Railway Village; Aquarium where the kids can actually pet a shark; boat tours where you can even go lobstering in addition to just having fun getting out on the water and seeing lots of lighthouses, walk along the footbridge that crosses over the harbor; fish off the footbridge or the Townsend Gut bridge (very popular with all ages); tour a lighthouse (Burnt Island Light in combo with the Balmy Days offers these and are great); and last but not least, watch taffy and fudge being made.

Boothbay Harbor is roughly about a 45 minute drive from Phippsburgh.

Check the BBH chamber at www.boothbayharbor.com. Good luck and post back and let us know how your visit went :).

Hi Agian lumom,

A couple other suggestions; Aquaboggin is a blast. It's located in Saco, about a 45 to 50 minute south of Phippsburgh and/or just a few minutes south of Portland.

There's a wave pool, water slides, bumper cars, and even stuff for real little ones to do. Of course this isn't a good idea for a rainy day but a fun one for all ages. Funtown Splashtown is just a few blocks down the road which offers arcade type games, rides, etc.

Another idea is the Maine Maritime Museum.

Last, drive down to Portland Lighthouse (again about a 45 minute drive or so) and fly kites. Besides the lighthouse being located high on a bluff overlooking the ocean with wonderful views out to sea and the shipping lanes, the surrounding area is all green grass and also sits high up and is great for flying kites. There's always a breeze. Can't remember exactly where, but there's a wonderful shop in the Old Port district of Portland that sells every kind of kite you could imagine. Bring a picnic and make a day of it.

Last but not least, check out www.bathmaine.com for more info and also www.visitmaine.com.

When you are at Popham Beach be sure to go down to the fort and walk the beach from there. You will most likely see seals bobbing along in the water.
