Golf outing October

We are four older couples who would like to stay near Lexington for 3-4 days in October and need suggestions for hotels, B & B's, etc. The men want to play reasonably priced golf and the women would enjoy touring or shopping. Can anyone offer advice on a good location they have enjoyed or have other ideas of what the women can do? Thanks in advance.

Lexington has a variety of public courses up to and including Griffin Gate which I believe hosted a recent Ryder Cup. Google Lexington Ky Public Golf for several websites listing local courses - with discount coupons!!

Being in October, depending upon the dates, Keeneland may be running for a day at the races. Then there's the Horse Park, the auto tour of the horse farms, and the yearling sales auction (don't rub your nose or you may end up owning a horse!!!LOL)at Keeneland where you get to watch the sheiks and other moneyed types spend millions on horses.

Shopping, you have an outlet mall in Georgetown, and 30 miles south on I-75 you have Berea and its hand craft artisan centers. Have lunch at the Boone Tavern while you're there.

Speaking of lunch, 28 miles southwest on US68 is Shakertown at Pleasant Hill, the restored and operating village of the religious order of Shakers. Overnight accommodations are available in the Family buildings and the dining rooms serve original Shaker recipes. A must do.

Lexington has a host of antebellum homes - Mary Todd Lincoln's family home, Hopemont of Gen. John Hunt Morgan, Ashland, and many more in the Gratz Park area - all easy walking.

Lexington Cemetery is also popular. Visit Henry Clay, the Morgan family plot and many more that you've read of in 19th century history class.

There are several nice wineries, and several distilleries, within a half hours drive of Lexington, also.

Contact the Lexington Convention & Visitors bureau for particulars and deals.

Hope this helps. Enjoy!!

Thanks for all the great ideas! Maybe it would be better to stay somewhere south of Lexington since many of the historical sites are in that direction. Any recommendations for places to stay?

What type of shopping do you like? The largest mall in KY is in Lexington. We also have some local shops that are fun. On Liberty Rd, aka decorators row, there are several nice home furnishing consignment shops. Scout, Room Service and Stall are all close to the Winchester Rd intersection. On Walton Ave you will find House. It's a nice home decor shop. Feather Your Nest is in Meadowthorpe and is an antique consignment shop. The outlet mall in Georgetown isn't a good outlet. However at the end of July a great outlet mall is opening in Simpsonsville.

If you like touring historic homes go to Ashland, the Henry Clay estate. Beautiful gardens. The Arboretum is in UK's campus and has a 2 mile paved path through it. There is usually a scarecrow contest in Oct and they are displayed throughout the paths.

I have read good reviews of several B and Bs in the area but haven't personally seen any of them. The Sheraton is centrally located and is nice.

There are tons of good restaurants, most of them downtown. One you might enjoy is Shakespeare and Company.
