Still evidence of hurricane damage on SSI or Jekyll?

We are spending our snow bird escape in the East Beach neighborhood of SSI February-March. We have been assured things are back to normal, but want to be prepared if there are still damaged areas. Mainly interested in Coast Guard beach, Gould’s inlet, and the bike paths on Jekyll. We also heard that Glory beach was closed on Jekyll and wondered if it is open by now. Thank you!

"We have been assured things are back to normal, but want to be prepared if there are still damaged areas"

If you have already "been assured", what is it that you want us to say?

Just verifying I guess. We have not received any information on the beaches and beach access I was asking about. I’m sensing this is a sensitive issue.

No, not a sensitive area. Hurricanes take down trees, move sand, reshape beaches. Downed trees are removed. There's nothing to be done about nature changing the shape of beaches. But the hurricane was four months ago and the island has reopened to residents and guests.

I am confused by your post. You've been assured that things are back to normal. But you are posting on a travel forum in order to "be prepared if there are still damaged areas". What is it that we can say to you to help you prepare? What is it that you are asking us to say - that you've not already been told?

We went there in December. The beaches were fine. The wooden steps at East Beach are still damaged but you can get on the beach with no problems. Coast Guard beach is fine, the bicycle paths are fine. You still see some damaged houses right by the ocean but all the shops are open and so are the restaurants.

We walked on the beach every day when we were there in December and rode our bicycles around the island and East Beach.

We meant to go to Jekyll but didn't make it over there.

Thank you so much for the information. So nice to hear from someone who has just been there that there is still good beach access, can bike, etc.

I live here and everything is fine. It took awhile for the debris trucks to finish up, but you might only notice some tree stumps. All is well, come on down!

A friend lives there and decorated her debris pile for Halloween. She was planning to decorate it for Christmas, but they finally came to haul away the logs and limbs.

Yea, we had neighbors who decorated their piles. It got to be fun after the frustration of waiting for the debris to be removed. The debris removal lasted until just before Christmas. It was very slow and annoying, but it is now finished
