We were in area for 4th of July and we decided to splurge and take day trip thru Greyfield. Our party consisted of myself, my 15yo son and 18 yo goddaughter. We went on 7/3. The Lucy Ferguson(Greyfield's ferry) set off about 930AM from Fernandina. We were on ferry with two employees, workers for tree company & several other day trippers.
Once on CI an employee escorted us up to Inn and gave us a brief history of the house and tour of public areas that we were allowed to access. Kitchen, bathrooms, where outside shower was, etc....
We took off on bikes to south end of island to check out Dungeness. The park service has recently cleaned up the mansion and put supports in the corners. They were also cleaning out an area by the old cars. Im not sure if it was park service employees or private company that was excavating the area around old cars but they were working hard in the heat. We then walked down to flats to walk among fiddler crabs. CI has recently received alot of rain from TS Debby and I was told the road to very south end was impassable. It was very hot, temps around 100. We were hungry so we headed on bikes back to Greyfield.
We ate lunch on the front porch which with shade and ceiling fans the heat was tolerable. Lunch consisted of crab salad sandwich, salad and chips. It was very good.
We then decided to swim and headed for Greyfield's beach. The road to beach at some parts had standing water that we had to wade through. A total of 6 people on beach(including us) that we could see. We pretty much had it to ourselves. The park service vans came by, I guess for a tour of CI that has recently started. The vans did not come near us so I couldnt see how many people were in their vans. I am not sure if it was tour or they were checking out parts of the island because of all the rain.
We then headed back to Greyfield to shower before our departure ferry at 330PM. They have a great outdoor shower with L'occitane bath products.
It was more expensive going through the Greyfield than park service but I think it was money well spent.
