Where to stay in Florida Keys??

We are arriving in Fort Lauderdale on Wed 30th Dec & thought it may be a good idea to visit the Florida Keys but have heard its a long drive. We have to be back at Miami Airport at Midday on New Years Day so only have 2 nights to spend - is is worth us staying in Key Largo? What happens there at New Year? Or should we stay somewhere else ?? Help!!

Key Largo is roughly a 90 minute drive from FLL.

Islamorada is another 30 minutes.

Marathon is another 30 minutes from Islamorada.

Key West is another hour from Marathon.

If you only go as far as Key Largo, you will miss the beauty of the drive on US 1. You'll want to go at least over the 7 mile bridge.

New Years is a busy time in the keys. You may not even be able to get a place to stay.

Buffetguy is correct the hotels/ resorts in the keys are busy at that time of year. Many tourists like to visit here for the warm weather. However, the keys are not large cities, so if you are looking for a big new years party or lots of bars then you would be better staying in Miami or FLL. If you decide to make the trip you could stay in Key Largo but you would want to take a day trip to Islamorada or Marathon the next day in order to see what the keys are about. I can't see going all the way to Key West as you really wouldn't have enough time to explore and have fun.

Between Christmas and New Years, many hotels and even the small B&B's have a 3-5 night minimum stay. I think for the 30th and New Years Eve, it will be next to impossible to find a place to stay. If you do, it will definitely seem as if you are paying for 7 nites!
