Best place to have dinner...on the water...or view of it..

Okay, one last question :) After our snorkeling adventure..we are actually going at 1:00pm. We might want to hang out and have dinner in Key Largo. Are there any recommendations for a place to have great food and a view of the water?

We are from up north so seriously we just want to see the ocean as much as possible :) It doesn't have to be a real expensive fancy place at all. Just good food :)

Thanks!

In Key Largo, you can go to Sundowners and have dinner while watching the sunset. Sundowners is not as good as it used to be & prices are nose-bleed. Skip Big Chill for food. Ditto for Snooks - nice happy hour & good place to watch the sun set, but NOT to eat anything. Our current best dinner spot in Fish House ENCORE. Sadly, they have an outside patio with a fountain, but are not on the water.

We just had brunch at Pilot House (on the ocean side harbor) and it was excellent. However, have not had more food there. Mandalay is supposed to be closing in a week, so cannot recommend it. I heard Chef Lupe is already at his new place in Marathon, so again, another point not to recommend.

Since you have time after the snorkel, I would make your way to Islamorada for dinner. Stop at Robbies to feed the tarpon (mm 77 bayside). Wander around the Worldwide Sportsman store. Maybe a drink at Zane Grey there (upstairs - great view) and then go to Morada Bay, Lorilei, Islamorada Fish Company.

Skip Lor a lei and Islamorada Fish co for food, go to them for drinks and apps only. Morada Bays food is much better. Island Grill has good food.

I agree with Bluewater. If you do drive another 30 minutes further south to Islamorada, skip Islamorada Fish Company (deep fried tourist trap) and Lor-e-lei (just plain awful food). Zane Grey is nice for drinks, but also skip the food here as IFC is preparing it in their kitchen.

We definitely like Island Grill (on the water) when we venture as far south as Islamorada.

You can also try Lazy Days in Islamorada.

GREAT food, it sits on the Ocean.

I agree with skipping Lor-E-Lei for food.

I think Lazy Days may be undergoing some changes that may or may not have an impact on the fare.

Heard at Chamber last week that Chef Lupe is closing The Mandalay in Key Largo and moving totally to a new place in Marathon. As he was also at Lazy Days... well... who knows.

Bluewater - have you heard anything re a new restaurant opening in the near future in Marathon? Or someone taking over a closed place?

In Key Largo, I would say Bayside Grille or Snooks both great sunset water views. Some of the others mentioned are not great water views but great food. So try one of the above if you are looking for great water views.

Does Lupe still have Lazy Days connections?

Word is....Lazy Days at old Frosty's. Thank goodness as Frosty's was the definition of horrible in every respect. Signs are up but doesn't say a name, just "New Waterfront Restaurant and Tiki bar"

Fan of Lazy Day's and look forward to seeing something different. So is it Lupe/new Lazy? Thought he had left....need scoop.

Mandalay hasn't closed yet - supposedly end of the month. They said "Chef Lupe found his own place in Marathon."

Bluewater - You solved the mystery. It has to be Frostys. Maybe I will hear more next week at Chamber.
