Ft Lauderdale or Miami with a car?

Hi All

I have 3 - 4 days to spend in Florida and am deciding on whether to stay in Miami or Ft Lauderdale. We plan on having a car - it just makes things so much easier.

Where do you think is the best place to stay? Is Ft Lauderdale a cheaper place than Miami - particularly for parking a car? We are looking for 4 - 5 star places to stay. Are the hotels better in Miami/Miami Beach areas?

Which is safer?

Thank you!

If you are looking for 4/5 star you will pay heavily for parking in either place, it will most probably be valet parking too, so you would have to factor in the cost of tips when the valet park guy returns your car to you. There is only one parking lot I know of in Fort Lauderdale which allows overnight parking, it is next to the Marriot Courtyard. In Fort Lauderdale there is one hotel which is in a bit of a remote spot on the beach which has free parking, which is the Lago Mar. You would not be able to comfortably walk to the main area of the beach where most of the restaurants are.

Both beaches are as safe as any big city beach is. Obviously you would need to take the normal precautions you would do in any big city anywhere in the world.
