Santa Barbara to San Simeon on Highway 1.

I was wondering how long it takes to drive from Santa Barbara to San Simeon on Highway 1 with sightseeing stops?

Also is it a very windy stretch of the highway?

The drive straight through, is about 2 1/2 hours. Where you might want to stop and for how long is up to you. San Luis Obispo, has one of the CA Missions and a charming downtown area. You might want to look at the Rock in Morro Bay, etc.

No, I don't think that part of your drive is very windy.

You will not be driving Highway 1 between Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, as that part of the coastline is housed by an air force base and no roads travel along that part.

You'll be on Highway 101, a multi lane highway through rolling hills, small towns and farms and ranches.

Once you connect with Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo, you'll enjoy multi lane driving until you reach Cayucos just north of Morro Bay and then it narrows to a 2 lane highway. The highway up to San Simeon is still an easy drive. The highway starts to get a little curvy just north of Hearst Castle, but the REALLY twisty, curvy part lies 14 miles ahead when the road rises dramatically above the Pacific Ocean and you encounter the first of many tight hairpin turns. There are several turn outs you can take advantage of if the drive becomes overwhelming and you feel the need to stop to compose yourself. It's also good for allowing faster traffic to go around you or to just take in the beautiful views spread out before you.

I am also making that drive in Early April. We will be leaving Hearst Castle around 10:30. Do you know of any great quick lunch stops along the way? Or should we just wait until we get into Santa Barbara?

Thank you for all your replies. This has been very helpful. I think we will have to get help in Anaheim re the best route to Santa Barbara and will definitely leave aroun 9:00-9:30am to avoid the peak hour traffic.

We are really looking forward to the trip.

Best Regards

There are fast food places in Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo & Pismo Beach where you can grab a quick lunch before continuing on to Santa Barbara. You can wait until SB if you wish. Without stops, the drive from Hearst to SB is around 2 1/2 hours.
