Each company is different. You have to read the T&C carefully to see what is or is not included. It is also relevant whether you have any cover for car rental excess in your travel insurance.

Take a look at the coverage that's included at CarHire3000.com. This is a 'car hire broker' that contracts with the major U.S. car hire companies and includes the insurance within the car hire quote. The coverage they are including is what is recommended.

You need Collision Damage Waiver which covers damage you do to the rental car. This is sometimes known as Loss Damage Waiver. You also need Supplemental Liability Insuracne which covers you against damage you do to some else (their car or their person). These two items are a must.

As HSJ says, the brokers generally include these coverages in the package offered to foreign renters.

Anything else is probably not necessary though some people get insurance to cover you against things stolen out of your rental car.

LivesinNewJersey has the good advice here. Usually you do better if you can find insurance coverage in your home country, than to buy it at the counter here.

New Zealand residents do best with hertz.com and nationalcar.com. Also check with Alamo.com. The confirmation should state that both collision and liability insurances are included (if you check box as new zealand resident).

i don't know how many times I have to post this! There is no reason to go through a broker, especially with people constantly posting about problems they've had with broker vouchers.

arbinator ~ check lots of options ... travel agent, TravelJigsaw, Hertz.co.uk as well as Hertz.com Figure out what will work best for you and your trip.

joesource ~ TripAdvisor is all about getting advice from different folks. If we all had the same opinion, preferences, or experiences, forums would be incredibly boring!
