8 days San Diego Area

Hi we are visiting our son from the UK who is working for the summer in Carlsbad and staying in Encinitas. We will have approx 8 days, we enjoy golf and would like to play at least 3 times including Torrey Pines, have been recommended to stay in La Jolla area, we would like an ocean view condo, can any body recommend anywhere or would we be better staying in San. Diego as we also want to see as much of the area as we can, also is it worth flying in and out of LA and driving down and maybe stay in LA for the last night and have a tour around LA?

Also is Encinitas a good place for a 22yr British guy to stay? Safe etc and much going on ?

Thanks for any comments.

Hi,

LaJolla is actually a neighborhood of the city of San Diego on its northern side. It is not a separate town. Encinitas is a very nice suburb with a kind of artsy /surfer feel to it if you are towards the ocean west of the I-5 freeway. It is perfectly safe as a place to stay but to get around usually one would use a car(or walk or bike) as buses would be the only public transit.

Torrey Pines gets quite busy so making tee time reservations is important.

Do you care about price for your condo? I ask because oceanfront in La Jolla will be very expensive in summer!!! Since you'll have a car you can stay anywhere in the area and still be able to get around to sightsee easily.

We live just south of the golf course(south of the Univ. of Ca. at San Diego campus) and it takes us about 20min. to get just about anywhere in town.

BTW although Torrey Pines is certainly famous there are many other golf course possibilities that might be easier to get on to play.

Also if you stay at one of the hotel right next to the course(Hilton Torrey Pines or The Lodge at Torrey Pines) they can help with tee times.

Just want to add that staying in one of the suburbs between La Jolla and your son like Del Mar, Solana Beach or Encinitas itself would also be fine.

Downtown Encinitas will be a lot of fun....there is Moonlight Beach and a nice stretch of bars, if not--for the most part, resembling mini strip malls--but lots of fun anyways that are all within walking distance to one another.....he just needs to be careful at night--as he should be anywhere--if he is driving after a drink or two as downtown is heavily patrolled by the Sherriff and there are checkpoints should he venture to and from some of the other beach cities Riff mentioned.

We have been in La Jolla since Wednesday and love it here! If you have an opportunity to spend time here, go for it! Enjoy your time in Southern CA! :)
