Carlsbad 7 days starting tomorrow including New Years

I will be in Carlsbad for 7 days starting tomorrow. I have a few questions of things to do.

What are some good places to see/eat/bars in Carlsbad itself (We are at the Hilton)?

We want to spend a day at the San Diego Zoo. Is it easier to drive or take the train (we do have a rent car). I hear the train is real easy?

If we wanted to see San Diego too, should we do it the same day as the zoo or should we do it in a separate day? What specific highlights in SD?

New Years activities? Especially if there are fireworks. We were thinking Universal but that's because we didn't have any better idea.

Hi,

There is free parking at the zoo and at Balboa Park where the zoo is located. It is easy to drive there. If you take a train you'd have to change for a bus and the drive is really very easy!

San Diego is a large city and the surrounding county is as large as the entire state of Connecticut so when you say you'd like to "see San Diego" what exactly does that mean to you???

What brought you here for your visit? You must have some idea of things you'd like to see/do besides the zoo???

Universal is in the northern part of LA which is a good 2 or more hours north of your location. There are no fireworks . Are you an adult couple or are you a family??? Advice will be different depending on who is in your travel group and what your interests might be????

Legoland has a special early kids NYE party with hats/ball drop and fireworks.

San Diego, maybe downtown? I'm not very familiar with the area. I know it is large.

I am actually in the area for business (thus staying in Carlsbad). I will just have a lot of free time thus my wife is joining me! We are wanting to take advantage of this excellent opportunity.

We are mid 20's. No kids. Love to have a fun time on New Years (and love fireworks if there is such an event). We just chose Universal because that's what we knew. We can go anywhere.

A lot of the hotels have NYE parties but most are fairly expensive.

Near you the Sheraton is having one. Here are some things going on near you:

www.sandiegoreader.com/news/carlsbad/events/#

Many of us don't like to drive far on NYE because of drunk people on the roads.

In downtown San Diego along the bay there are ships to visit, bay cruises, whale watching cruises and of course restaurants and shops.

Cabrillo National Monument has great views, some Ca. history an old lighthouse and tide pools to explore below it at low tide.

Then of course there are beaches to explore for scenery, biking/walking/ etc.

This web site describes them for you:

You can also go to mountains and desert areas within a 2hr. drive. You'll have to see what the weather is like in the coming days as we have been having the start of a rainy(and even snowy in the mts.) el nino year!

There are lots of good eats in Carlsbad. Just depends on if you are looking for upscale or hole in the wall. If you give a few more specifics I would be happy to provide some suggestions...

Thanks K-C

I love hole in the wall places.

And how about a steak and a seafood? Casual or nice, just whichever taste the best.

And breakfast? Any neat place to watch NFL that has the NFL Ticket for a 10am game.

The West is an upscale steakhouse that is a bit pricey but very good.

You can also try Vigilucci's. They have a steak and seafood restaurant with great views and f the ocean. They also have an Italian restaurant in the Carlsbad Village.

For lunch try Board and Brew. They have sandwiches and beer so you can't go wrong.

For good pizza go to Pizza Port. It can be really busy on the weekend so be forewarned!

If you want some really good Mexican food, go to Lola's 7 up Market and Deli. No website it is so hole in the wall!

3292 Roosevelt St. Carlsbad, CA 92008

If you haven't been, make sure you get a double double from In-n-Out. One of the best fast food burgers you will ever have! If you have been then you already know!

O'Sullivans is a great Irish pub. Not sure if they have the NFL Sunday ticket. There is a Buffalo Wild Wings not to far away in Oceanside which has it though.

For breakfast, head north to Oceanside for the Beach Break Cafe. Really good breakfast. Make sure you try the coffee cake!

www.beachbreakcafe.net

Don's Country kitchen is also a good option.

Please let me know if you would like any more ideas for food. There is plenty in the Carlsbad area!

Universal is a long, long ways from Carlsbad and an ugly drive.

I would go see the USS Midway, Coronado, La Jolla and do the drive from Mission Beach to La Jolla.

Balboa Park has too many great museums to mention them all.

As to dining, it depends on the kind of food you like. San Diego is well know for its craft brew industry. Here is one of the Top Questions from the San Diego Forum.

You also might check the casinos for NYE events.

A short drive is Jakes's at Del Mar. Practically on the sand, great steaks, view and service, not a hole in the wall, but always a favorite when we visit. My favorite burger joint is Jeff's Burgers in La Jolla. It's a couple blocks north of La Jolla Shores beach. park in the beach lot, walk up to Jeff's and bring your food back to enjoy at the beach. (Watch out for the seagulls stealing your French fries though .)
