So. Cal. Family Vacation -- hotel advice needed

We're planning a one week vacation in July and hope to hit Legoland, SD Zoo, beach and Disney. Any suggestions on where we should stay? We're willing to pay approx. $250/night. Do we need to pay more to get something nice? How should we break up our nights. We're flying into and out of LAX. Kids are 7 and 9 year old boys. Any other can't miss sights?

Thanks much!!!

OK, the Disneyland Resort is in Anaheim, California. Easy access from the LAX airport.

LEGOLAND is in Carlsbad, which is south of Anaheim by about an hour.

The San Diego Zoo is about 2 hours away south of Anaheim.

Most folks say it is worth 3 days to see the Disneyland Resort, and you have 2 one day trips south. Plus there is much more to see and do near Anaheim.

Many folks opt for Anaheim as their base, others would split their stay between Anaheim and San Diego.

Anaheim has a LOT of Hotels and Motels of different types, some of which are extended stay Hotels. Based on a one week stay, the Residence Inn Maingate is within walking distance of the Disneyland Resort, large rooms, comes with a kitchen (pots, pans, dishes), free breakfast and more.

If you don't get a rental car, LEGOLAND is a bit hard to get to using public transit (there would be a large taxi fee involved) but easy public transit to the San Diego Zoo.

GrayLine offers private tours from Anaheim to both locations.

I would add Knott's Berry Farm, easy access from Anaheim to Buena Park.

Here are a few more links to help you out.

Hope that helps.

I'd rent a car from LAX and drive to San Diego for the first part of your vacation.

There are lots of lovely scenic places to stay and it wlll be pretty and relaxing.

There are hotels in the suburban city of Carlsbad which you can find by going to the Carlsbad forum on this site.

You could also stay in neighborhoods further south in the city of San Diego like Mission Bay, Pacific Beach etc.

IF you are in California for a week you could stay in San Diego for the first 4 days. In addition to the activities you mentioned you can also visit some ships in our lovely downtown bayfront and/or take a bay cruise. You can also visit La Jolla Cove to see seals and pelicans in their native environment instead of just in captivity.

After those 4 days I'd drive up to Anaheim and stay near Disneyland .

That way you'd also be closer to LAX to take your flight home.

This would give you a chance to see some of the scenic areas of southern California and not just be in the theme park environment.
