Is the "Maun Game Sanctuary" open for birding?

We are avid bird watchers and have an afternoon and overnight in Maun before starting our safari in June. We have heard conflicting information about the Maun Game Sanctuary. I have read that it is a good area for self guided walks for bird watching, but I have also been told and it is closed and is not an option for birding. We would welcome any additional information about the Maun Game Sanctuary's status. In addition, if anyone has birding tips for Maun or knows of birdwatchers in the area that are willing to serve as an afternoon guide it would be most appreciated.

Unfortunately the Maun Game Sanctuary is no longer open. In terms of birding trips in Maun you could approach one of the lodges such as Okavango River Lodge or Island Safari Lodge for an afternoon boat cruise where you will see various bird species. At the moment there are no specialised birding trips that run in Maun.

We had an afternoon and overnight in Maun, before our safari last December. We stayed at Discovery B&B and were very pleased we did that. They collected us from the airport, provided transport to a riverside lodge for dinner and took us to the airport the next morning. We are birdwatchers and it was an added bonus to discover that a significant number of birds could be seen in the grounds of the B&B., particularly in the morning before we had to leave. The owners appeared to be quite knowledgeable about the local bird life.

Our trip was booked through Safari Specialists ( highly recommend ) and they arranged this for us, but I am sure you could organise it directly with the owners.

We too have booked through Safari Specialists and have been extremely pleased with Nadine's help in booking our safari. This week I put out an inquiry to Birding Botswana which is based in Maun and Richard Randall is going to take us out birding on the afternoon/evening that we are in Maun. We will report back after we return.

Our trip to Botswana was amazing and getting us started on the right foot was Richard Randall, from 'Birding Botswana'. We arrived in Maun on an early afternoon and were to head out the next morning on the first day of our safari trip. We wanted to take advantage of our free afternoon and get exposed to some of the local birds right out of the gate. Our time with Richard helped us do exactly that. He picked us up at our hotel (Riley's) and, because we just had a short amount of time, took us to a few birding hot spots. Being birders ourselves, we didn't bat an eye when he asked if we were willing to visit the local sewage ponds in Maun (a source of nearby freshwater...even if not perfectly clean). We also visited the town dump where we saw an incredible display of Marabou storks--literally thousands of them. In between, we birded the countryside. In a couple of hours, we got approximately 40 species and were that much better informed when we headed off into the bush. Richard was truly enjoyable to spend time with and was quite knowledgeable about the region. We would not hesitate to book an outing with him again and, for the bird inclined, he's an excellent resource for those traveling in the Maun area of Botswana.
