Hi Youbee,

The roads are quite challenging, you will experience, Sand (Not too bad at this time of the year) MUD! and some quite deep water crossings. Another thing to remember is you will also encounter a lot of Elephants which can be quite daunting!! if you have little or no experience. My advice would be to do a 4X4 course before, so you know the basics or join up with a Safari operator. There is a new lodge in Khwai (Sango Safari Camp) that offers good rates to self drive tourists. if you are looking for Safari operators try: Bush Ways Safaris, Lettaka Safaris and Karbu Safaris.

Hi,

We are thinking of renting a caravan and driving from South Africa to Victoria falls, and across Botswana to Namibia in May/June next year. Is this possible? What do you mean by deep water crossings?

Thanks

David

If you have little 4x4 experience, I would certainly advise you to travel with someone else, in convoy (two vehicles). The route is not technically very difficult, but certainly more challenging than normal gravel roads in South Africa. Avoid the rainy season, and make sure you carry the right stuff with you. Deflate your tyres to about 1 bar to help you over the deep sand. Keep in mind you cannot drive from Maun to Kasane in one day, via Moremi and Savute. If your goal is simply getting to Kasane, you can also take the tar road, which will be a lot quicker and easier. Also, to stay overnight you have to have advance reservations (even for camping).
