Family safari - Botswana

Can anyone recommend reputable travel companies or suggest an itinerary to travel around Botswana for 2 adults and 2 children (age 15 & 11). I can't find tours that encompass everything (!) (they appear restricted due to the 'family' element) - I want to travel along the Okavango delta in a canoe, go on game drives/ walks, salt flats etc. I would also like to finish off the holiday at Vic falls (can't work out best way of getting there drive/plane?)

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks

A local tour operator should be able to put together a suitable Botswana family itinerary. The poster akgirl5 below details her family experience with one local operator. Another option to consider a family guided mobile safari these can be tailor made to suit your travel preferences. Here is a link detailing one families experience using local tour operator Maun based Lelobu Safaris

You don't really want a set itinerary tour, you want a tailor made trip. A tailor made tour operator can put this together picking from the best camps to suit your needs, with flights between them.

How open are you to camping? An alternative to a fly in trip is a mobile safari, where you camp. These can be more comfortable than they sound, with en suite "bush bathrooms" with bucket showers. For a group of 4 you could easily have a private trip just for your group.

Or you could combine a bit of both, perhaps a week of mobile camping plus a few nights at a fixed camp and a couple of nights at the falls to make a 2 week trip.

Combining with Vic Falls is easy- you would end your Botswana trip in Kasane (whether by road or air) and then your tour operator could arrange a road transfer. You won't find the flights that serve the camps on any schedules- these are small planes with no fixed schedule that do transfers between camps depending on what guests want to go where on particular days.

I assume that with kids you will be limited to school holidays. In our summer, that is high season in Botswana and very expensive and therefore definitely worth considering the mobile option for at least some of your trip.

If you can fit it in, it is worth considering the Easter holidays or even Christmas, both of which should be less expensive than July/Aug.

I use Safari Specialists in Maun for my trips. If you specifically want a UK operator, I use Expert Africa for Zambia and Tanzania and they also do Botswana.

Depending on what company you use, but some Private Mobile safari companies charge the same rate throughout the year , so no high or low season. Makes it much easier for you to chose dates.

Thanks all for getting back to me - I've had a quick look at the first link and the trip sounds exactly what I had in mind. I'll look at that tour operator.

Also thanks stokeygirl for your reply, really helpful - will also make enquiries with the uk tour operator. Jo

Excuse me for jumping on your post - what would be the best time of year to Safari? We are quite open but was thinking end of May-June-July but unsure when. We were looking at Tanzania but someone mentioned Botswana is very good too and the massive pull for me is the proximity to Victoria Falls. We are interested in elephants, rhinos, cheetah, lions, zebra, giraffe.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

jjcm May, June and July are great times to visit northern Botswana and, depending on your outfitter, can offer excellent value.

Speak to a local specialist tour operator to make sure your safari ticks all the boxes.
