week in Dominical in January - waterfalls, etc on our own??

We will be in Dominical for a week in January and would like to see some of the countryside. Are there waterfalls that we could drive /hike to see ourselves, or is it advisable to go through an agency that offers the tours.

Also - what is within reasonable driving distance for us to see? Thanks!

Go check the whale tail. And you are about one hour from Manual Antonio for a day trip.

for the nauyaca waterfall, if we don't get a 4x4 or a tour, is there a safe place to park our car?

thanks!

We are hear staying in Uvita right now. We made a rather large mistake (part ours and mostly the park manager/desk person). Ballena National Park for the whale tale is in Uvita (playa uvita). We entered a bit south (sign said ballena national park). There was a couple ahead of us (she appeared 7-8 months pregnant) and they asked to go to the whale tale (just like us). He gave us folded maps and said to go to the right when we got to the beach. We headed out and could see a mass of large rocks on the beach (not passable). I went back to the registration desk and he pointed to even a larger map and illustrated that we walk on the beach, exit to a trail, enter back on the beach and the second set of rocks exit to a trail and then again exit to the beach and walk to the trail. He said 2km and there was a small sign pointing right that said 2km. We passed the pregnant couple at the second rock section and entered a trail that went straight up. It was adventurous and exhausting. We started questioning things pretty strongly (even after stating we have gone way past 2km) when we heard less of the ocean and saw a sign near the top that said "warning private property". At this point it was a long, long, way back so we forged on and met a young couple. They led us to a worker and when we told them our story we were informed we were at La Cusinga, a hillside resort. They were very pleasant and called us a taxi so we could get back to our car. The pregnant couples car was still in the parking lot upon our arrival. I think I feel worse for them and was angered by the directions given by the desk attendant. It was clear )spoken in Spanish by the pregnant husband the desire to go to the whale tale) and we were mislead.

We then drove to Uvita, found the sign playa Uvita sign, paid to park, entered using our stamped ticket from the "other" ballena national park entrance and got to the tale just before the tide came in. Lesson learned.

That is such a shame, harleygal. We must have been lucky and found the right parking place, and from when we reached the beach it was easy to spot the tail (low tide was approaching. Maybe try one more time. Use Google Maps to locate the proper entrance (you have been way south, IMO).
