Scottsdale or Prescott

Hi, we're travelling from the Grand Canyon to San Diego as part of a honeymoon road trip next May, and we've allowed a night to stop somewhere on the way (roughly- we want to visit somewhere, not make the best time). We've originally planned Scottsdale but I wonder if Prescott would be a better option. Any ideas?

Stopping in Prescott would put you on a much more scenic route. And keep you out of the Phoenix traffic.

Thanks! Can the Phoenix traffic get quite bad? We'd be arriving on a Friday and leaving on the Saturday.

Phoenix traffic can be horrible, particularly during rush hours. And Prescott is a nice place just for a visit. Make sure you spend some time on historic Whiskey Row.

It's hard to make a recommendation when you haven't said what you are interested in doing in Prescott or Scottsdale. Without knowing that, we are just projecting what is interesting to us.

Phoenix traffic can be a nightmare but not so much going towards Scottsdale from 17 in the late afternoon. Traffic tends to be heavier that time of day coming FROM Scottsdale towards I17. Of course, accidents can happen anywhere at any time and that is what makes the real nightmares. Normal traffic on a Saturday morning from Scottsdale would not be outrageous.

Yeah sorry, we'll probably be spending a good part of the morning at GC, so wouldnt expect to arrive at either until late afternoon so unlikely we would be looking to do any hiking etc. More likely looking for a good meal, some interesting sites and probably a couple of drinks before heading off to SD the next morning.

I think Prescott is more out of your way for one night. Consider stopping in Cave Creek area for a western town atmosphere. It’s not far from Scottsdale but quieter.

Definitely Prescott! Adorable historic town with a Victorian/western flavor. Stay at The Grand Highland and have dinner at El Gato Azul. Hike Thumb Butte- if you have time- which is right outside of town. Or just walk around...a great independent bookstore and lots of cool places to have a drink. You'll love it!

Actually, stopping in Scottsdale would be quite out of your way. Just doing a Google Mapping of the drive, the shortest route will take you through Prescott. Going to Scottsdale adds about 80 miles to the trip versus going through Prescott.

Since you are the one who originally posted that you might be interested in Scottsdale it appeared that you didn't mind coming down and driving over from Phoenix area. It's your honeymoon, so you make the decision. Since it's a honeymoon it's all about who you are with vs. where you are. You'll have a great time where ever you are.
