Phoenix and side trips in January

My husband and I are visiting Phoenix in January. We are an older active couple and love the outdoors and beautiful scenery. We like to stay away from the tourist areas and go a little off the beaten track. Although we love to walk, we cant do any serious hiking. We have never been to Arizona or New Mexico and should have at least a week. Also, we cannot afford expensive places. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks so much! WEndy

What does "expensive" mean to you? That would help people make recommendations for you. Have you looked into spending a couple of nights in Sedona? Lots of accommodations there at different price points. Can you swing a night at the Grand Canyon, weather permitting?

Thanks. We would like to spend under $125 a night for a hotel.

I bought my husband a couple of smoking & grilling classes for his 50th birthday and he LOVED them. They were put on by Phoenix BBQ and Grilling School (http://phoenixbbqandgrillingschool.com). They offer all kinds of classes (steak, seafood, gourmet burger, etc). We traveled from Southern California (6 hour drive) just for these classes! :D He took the 6 hour smoking and grilling class one day then the 3.5 hour seafood class the next day. He LOVED the hands-on and eating the delicious food after!

Both of you can take the classes or you can send your husband while you go to the zoo or do some "retail therapy". ;)

Groupon has a deal right now (https:/…phoenix-bbq-and-grilling-school-llc), as does Living Social (https://www.livingsocial.com/deals/1462710-6…).

Have fun in Phoenix!

Cheers! :D

Tempe is a reasonably prised area of Phoenix

There is large outlet mall with reasonable prices

It is a very much Mexican influenced area of Phoenix

$125/month will not get very good hotels, but do shop around. You would be coming in peak season.
