Leather shopping: jackets, shoes and handbags

Can anyone recommend some reliable, reasonable places to purchase men's and women's leather shoes? Also, interested in men/women's leather jackets and handbags. We will be staying in the Recoleta area

Hi Ade5!

If you'd like to get great leather jackets at reasonable prices, maybe check out Murillo street.

Murillo 600 is an area with a lot of leather goods shops. It is in Villa crespo neighborhood, about 20/30 minutes by taxi from Recoleta.

The area around Florida street has a lot of high-quality leather goods shops, but they are tourist-oriented, so the prices are very high.

Enjoy!

Also Murillo street prices are posted for "cash" (pesos) Credit card is more. US cash should be a hair less. If you are having something custom made for you...pay by credit card. Oftentimes they miss their deadline and you are stuck..they say they will mail it and some do...others...well. By paying by credit card you can dispute the charge and get it reversed.

Many of the shops are owned by the same guys. Rather than have a giant store they have several little ones with different looks. The merchanside is pretty much the same up and down the street. There were a few nice stores...with higher end stuff...but expensive. As expensive as downtown...like the tourist trap places. Still and all my wife got a jacket there...she said it was unique..something you cold not get in the USA...stylewise. So if you are just going to buy an ordinary looking coat...buy it at home ..imported from China but made of exported Argentine leather....

Still and all worth a trip if you are into leather...coats I mean.

I have not been overwhelmed by the quality of leather goods - especially the high end, made to order jackets etc. Even in well-reputed stores, the quality of workmanship is sometimes questionable.

For men's shoes that seem to be consistently of very good quality, try Lopez Taibo in Recoleta on Alvenida Alvear and Ayacucho.

I second Marnie's recommendation for Lopez Taibo. Very comfortable, well made shoes. Alas, prices continue to go up. The tassel slip on model I bought three years ago for less than 500 pesos now sells for 750. Their main store is on Corrientes. In addition to the Recoleta branch, there is another store in Galerias Pacifico mall.
