Accomodation in and around Kruger

Hi guys,

We're on our honeymoon looking to stay in Kruger or close to - around the $200 USD a night price range. Any suggestions? We're obviously there to Safari as much as possible. We're going to Etosha in Namibia aswell.

We're also flying in from Australia to Joburg - is it best to get on a place to an airport near Kruger or arrange transport for us to be picked up at the airport?

Cheers!

Flights from Johannesburg to Nelspruit, Hoedspruit or Phalborwa are fairly expensive but convenient. Have you booked your flight yet? We always get an inclusive ticket to one of the above on Qantas or SAA which works out cheaper than two tickets booked separately. There are quite a few shuttle companies who do road transfers to Nelspruit and Ashtons Shuttle do runs to Hoedspruit. $200/night for a lodge in the private concessions for a couple/night is very low end of the scale, I am not sure you would get accommodation for that price. (Or do you mean per person?) You would afford accommodation at Sanparks camps in self-catering bungalows or lovely permanent safari tents (with ensuite) for around $100+ and self drive which is what we do and it is great fun, but perhaps not what you want to do on a honeymoon. (Although you can use the park restaurants if you don't want to cook!)

As you are going to Etosha as well I would suggest staying somewhere outside the park and do day trips as well as exploring the Blyde River Canyon/ Panorama Route.

Hazyview is always a good place to base yourself with lots of acticities on offer as well as good restaurants to choose from.

200 USD for 2 people will give you a very nice choice of accomnmodation (4-5 star)

I would recommend you take a look at the SANParks website - it's incredibly useful indeed. We booked our entire Kruger trip via this website and stayed in some amazing places. I have written a blog about the places we stayed in: tarajiblue.com/2012/… I hope you find this useful. We were genuinely surprised about the (high) quality of accommodation in Kruger.

We've had very good luck with functional, mid range game lodge called Gomo Gomo Game Lodge in Klasserie part of Kruger. Its affordable and one of the Destination Experts for this forum once said, they get the important things rights. Here is our review from last summer (w/pictures) of the accommodations.

Have done safari all across Africa, including Etosha (great choice by the way). We are heading back to Gomo Gomo for a longer stay this June, return trips this quickly is a bit of a rarity for the wife and I. Anyway, they are a good consideration.
